Cool Garden Spider * 2
    #16566951 - 07/22/12 07:16 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I knew this spider lived in my garden but this is the first time I've gotten pics.
It's pretty big, the thorax is probably close to a centimeter long. I didn't measure it.

Vegetation has crawled for miles towards the cities. It is waiting. Once the city is dead, the vegetation will cover it, will climb over the stones, grip them, search them, make them burst with its long black pincers; it will blind the holes and let its green paws hang over everything.

They aren't 'that' deadly, you'd probably survive a bite. There are more dangerous spiders.
But she's gorgeous! I had seen her before, but this morning was cool.
I was watering plants and disturbed some small grasshoppers. One jumped into the web.
The commotion brought out the spider and there was a chase. Grasshopper got away, and then I ran and got my camera while she was resting up.
It's gone back to its hiding spot now, I just went and looked.

Right, most dangerous spider in the US. Still not that dangerous as spider go.
Australians deal more dangerous spiders from the time they learn to walk.

Brown recluse spider

Quote:

Wikipedia said:
The brown recluse spider is native to the United States from the southern Midwest south to the Gulf of Mexico. The native range lies roughly south of a line from southeastern Nebraska through southern Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana to southwestern Ohio. In the southern states, it is native from central Texas to western Georgia and north to Kentucky.[3][4]

Quote:

Wikipedia said:
The bite frequently is not felt initially and may not be immediately painful, but it can be serious. The brown recluse bears a potentially deadly hemotoxic venom. Most bites are minor with no necrosis. However, a small number of brown recluse bites do produce severe dermonecrotic lesions (i.e. necrosis); an even smaller number produce severe cutaneous (skin) or viscerocutaneous (systemic) symptoms. In one study of clinically-diagnosed brown recluse bites, skin necrosis occurred 37% of the time, while systemic illness occurred 14% of the time.[15] In these cases, the bites produced a range of symptoms common to many members of the Loxosceles genus known as loxoscelism, which may be cutaneous and viscerocutaneous. In very rare cases, bites can even cause hemolysis—the bursting of red blood cells.[16]
Most brown recluse bites do not result in necrosis or systemic effects. When both types of loxoscelism do result, systemic effects may occur before necrosis, as the venom spreads throughout the body in minutes. Children, the elderly, and the debilitatingly ill may be more susceptible to systemic loxoscelism. The systemic symptoms most commonly experienced include nausea, vomiting, fever, rashes, and muscle and joint pain. Rarely, such bites can result in hemolysis, thrombocytopenia, disseminated intravascular coagulation, organ damage, and even death.[17] Most fatalities are in children under the age of seven[18] or those with a weak immune system.
While the majority of brown recluse spider bites do not result in any symptoms, cutaneous symptoms occur more frequently than systemic symptoms. In such instances, the bite forms a necrotizing ulcer that destroys soft tissue and may take months to heal, leaving deep scars. These bites usually become painful and itchy within 2 to 8 hours. Pain and other local effects worsen 12 to 36 hours after the bite, and the necrosis develops over the next few days.[19] Over time, the wound may grow to as large as 25 cm (10 inches). The damaged tissue becomes gangrenous and eventually sloughs away.

The brown recluse is the deadliest spider in the US.

Some slight pixalation around the edges and assorted blurring makes me suspect this image is photoshopped (although the website seems legit).

Just saying.

Yupp during my living in the western foothills of sc, as a young gunner, my mom got popped by a brown recluse. Right on the arm, working outside in our semi-forested, bushy back yard.
Disgusting bite. T starts eating. Away at skin pretty damn quick.
Needless to say they aren't cool.
She had to pop some steriods and antibiotics if I'm remembering accurately.
Blech.
The one you have is purty though.

I never said anything about the black widow being the most deadly man,not sure where you got that.I quoted a site that said one of the most dangerous, not the most dangerous.
