Can I do it?
    #1655560 - 06/23/03 07:07 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

O.K. here's what I have. I have a 55g fish tank, a ton of colonized jars (68 ecuador), cool mist humidifier, all the instuments(hygrometer, therm. ect), and alot of 50/50+ casing material.

I need some of your opinions of the following technique.
I plan on using the entire tank as a casing and I will use a basic casing tek... prolly 101. I will have the humidifier attatched with a hose to the top of the tank and have it running all the time(constant gas exchange). Before that though, I will keep it dark and have no gas exchanges until myc. is sufficient to initiate pinning. I will then add light, gas exchange and cool temps to bring on the pins. Basically, instead of using a baking tray for the casing container, I'm using the whole fruiting chamber.

Any pointers, criticism or advise would be greatly appreciated. Let me know what you think. Thanks.
It will look like this incase i didn't explain very well.

First, how deep will the substrate layer be?

Second, light will be able to penetrate the side of the aquarium, so expect invitro fruits. These must be dug out or they will rot and cause you problems later on. You COULD tape along the entire substrate depth with black electrical tape or something of the sort so light doesn't penetrate it.

Third, as you know, CO2 sinks... you're going to need a way to get rid of that CO2 build-up.

I have an automated set-up, yet I STILL mist the sides of the fruiting chamber to induce pinning.

The substrate layer will be between 3/4" and 1".

The sides will be covered leaving only the top of the tank (or possibly the top third) open for light.

I suppose I could drill a hole on each side of the tank at the bottom (just above the casing layer) to allow the co2 to escape. I would put a filter of sorts in the holes of course.

But, as far as the general idea? Would this work?

That's a very thin substrate layer.
I personally go with 6-7'' depth substrate layer, good, plentiful flushes with big mushrooms.

Yes, drill some holes and either stuff with polyfill or cover with tyvek (you can get some tyvek envelopes from the Post Office).

That is a good general idea though. Tell us how it works out for you.

Great, thanks daba. I guess I'll prolly use all the cakes I have then. One last "Q" though. That tyvek stuff allows enough gas exchange?

Sure does. You can also use polyfill, like I said. At the arts and crafts store its $2 for a giant bagfull.

Be careful when drilling glass... but I'm sure you know that already.

Sorry, i forgot to ask one last "Q". Which would you recommend: using whole cakes or crumbled cakes? Thanks.
