Hmm, I am a bit confused
    #1654497 - 06/22/03 09:55 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Ok, so I am walking around and I keep finding these shrooms that look exsactly like Panaeolus castaneifolius, This is not supposed to grow in upstate new york, but it looks exsactly like it, is growing in the right kind of place (grassy areas)

is it possible they could be it?

A guide on shroomery said that Panaeolus subbalteatus and Psilocybe semilanceata grew here, for some reason I assumed that they were the only ones, i guess I was mistaken.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Oh, its a bit off subject, but I have a question, the hunting FAQ lists them as " sometimes slightly hallucinogenic "

is it still worth it to eat them in hopes of tripping?

You shouldn't even consider eating them until you are certain of what they are. Comparing them to photographs can be helpful, but should not be considered a good way to identify mushrooms. The biggest problem is that most people don't know exactly which details they should be comparing. In particular, beginners tend to put way too much emphasis on cap color.

I'm probably going off too much, but the signs so far are that we've started "people eating unknown mushrooms week", and it would be nice if you wouldn't join that stupid trend.

Please take the time to carefully identify them. If you don't have much experience then you probably won't be able to be sure of what they are right now. That's OK. You'd probably be amazed how often even professional mycologists can't tell you what kind a mushroom is. It often takes hours with a microscope in a lab and paging through books to figure out what something is (including the professionals).

If you think they may be, dry them carefully and store them so that you'll have them available to examine in the future. In the meantime, send Mr_M some spores and he'll be able to help you confirm your ID. If it turns out that you're right, then the preserved mushrooms will be find. If it turns out you were wrong, then you might have saved yourself a visit to an evergency room.

Good luck, and happy mushrooming!

Yes, yes, I did not plan on eating them until I was 100% sure they are what I think they are.

But, if what I think they are is not even worth eating, then I am not going to go thru the trouble of hunting and identifying them.

so, yeah, if they turn out to be good, would it be worth it to eat them?
