why won't my trash can fruit?
    #1654489 - 06/22/03 09:51 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

i have a trash can with a lot of mycelium growing through it, but it doesn't seem to want to fruit. it seems to be growing well under the casing's surface, but it is not really growing towards the surface that much. it was cased about two weeks ago with a compost/manure mixture. it really isn't doing much.

the closet that it is in has been staying at about 80 degrees and 88.9%
humidity for the last few days. humidity had been a little lower previously.

it does have a bit of contamination that is a reddish color. you can see it in the picture. i think the contamination has been dying off. it definitely isn't growing any. could the contam have caused it not to fruit?
what am i doing wrong? did i made the casing layer too thick?

I think the temp in your closet may be too hot.

Heres something that might help. Put black tape around the sides so that only the top recives light. Thats what I do with casings.

The mycellium has not overgrown entire can which means that you have a big contamination problem. That reddish color is probably just one of many kinds of contamn you got.
If a can like that isn't fully colonized in two weeks it's doomed.

Casing should not contain nutrients.

I wish you better luck next time!

I think it maybe a few thing all at once like what is your air exchange?the contams.is that the contams to the right side on the picture?if so thats looks like alot of it i know that is hight for furiting but they say keeps it around 75-80f so it is just where you want to have it but did you hear of cold shocking? put it in your fridge(that looks to be too big for a fridge) or a cold place over night that will most time shock the mycelium to pin and also give it 12hours of light and 12hours dark till you get pins.but most people trash the batch with the contams cuz for the most part it's not worth the trouble

i just took a look to see if anything was happening with the can. it is definitely trying to colonize. i has actually colonized quite a bit of the surface since i took the pic this morning. i thought this was the same stuff i used to get a few years back, but i think walmart has changed it's recipe. the stuff walmart used to have wouldn't colonize well, but it worked out great as a casing layer. i didn't even have to add anything to it.

i doubt it will succeed in total colonization. that thing is 10" tall and 8" diameter. it definitely won't fit in my fridge for a cold shock. the contamination doesn't spread around the side, even though the pic makes it look that way. i took that picture in the dark. my camera has some sort of red night vision type light.

hopefully it will pull through, but i think i'll be singing "another on bites the dust" soon.
