must initiate pins before overlay
    #1654241 - 06/22/03 06:28 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

Below is an imaginary coir/verm casing. The mycelium has been growing at the surface for 3 days. The mycelium is damp and soft (not hard, which means no overlay yet?) No pins in sight. The temperature has been at a consistent 72 degrees. Humidity is greater than 90%...probably much greater, and that may be the problem. The casing gets 12 hours of indirect light per day. Why won't pins form? Is this casing about to overlay?

Any discussion of this hypothetical situation would be appreciated.

Fan it alot, get an ice pack and stick it in your terrarium to bring temps down to like 60 or so for a few nights to shock that bastard. Fan 4 times a day probably or more, just make sure the humidity is up. Don't spray it too much.... you might have to wait a while. It took me over two weeks to get a cake to pin with 12 hours of light a day and multiple fannings.

It took afoaf's casing six days before hyphal knots even appeared. Another week for full pin flush and 7-8 days for the pins to mature. Don't worry about it until you see contams. Remember, this is a living organism fighting to reproduce. It'll yeild mushies if you provide even remotely close to proper conditions. All the talk about exact temp and RH is for optimum growth, it can vary quite a bit and still give the shroomies enough to grow.

okay -- sure, waiting is fine , but what about overlay? the casing layer is 75% colonized.

If they still look like the pics, you're doing just fine. The myc. continues to grow for a few days after being put in the chamber.

That is far from overlay... When it looks like this, start to worry.

Light, humidity and temperature sound acceptable.

You've done well bringing them this far. You said it's only been three days. Be patient.

Just fan more..... They look healthy... They just seem not to be getting enough fresh air. I had the same problem recently. I was using large but shallow bowl as terrarium. It took some time for me to understand that they needed to be fanned more often. Just an idea....

they'll still fruit even with overlay,
all pf cakes have overlay.
overlay just makes it hard for the casing to absorb water.
if it gets too bad just cover with more casing, it'll switch to fruiting mode soon.

Did you make a multispore inoculation?, seems poor dykarion mycelium, maybe is it,a poor genetic strain.

Good look.

disaster [Re: KLR]
    #1662445 - 06/25/03 06:40 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

as suspected, the casing did eventually overlay.

Pics are below.  The mycelium grew thicker and thicker until parts of it turned yellow and became hard.

The casing never pinned, but it did develop some green, is this because:

the humidity is too high?  it's at about 100% all day everyday.  No one said anything about this in response to the first post.  Aren't casing supposed to get ~90% humidity at fruiting time?

the temp is too high.  Due to lack of air conditioning, the fruiting temperature can't be maintained.  It went from a perfect 71.8 to 82 degrees all the time (even at night!).  Any clever tricks to lower temps permenantly?  or even temporarily.

What to do about the green mold?  Can this thing be fixed?  Please elaborate!

Throw that thing in a hole outside, its done... You could always try to cut it out, then put salt where the mold was, but your better off just throwing it out. I wouldn?t even bother unless it was just a small little speck of green.

The problem isn?t your humidity... More likely the temperatures... Casings need high humidity at first, to allow for pin set, then it is supposed to be lowered, but it is NOT necessary.

Try to keep things clean (especially after this mold attack), and be careful when your examining your casings. Particularly when you take them out of your fruiter to take pictures, they are very vulnerable to nastiness in the air landing on them.

here is an update with MORE questions about this hypothetical casing --

the advice given above to "throw it in the backyard" was not taken -- instead, the cobweb/green contaminated area was removed and hippie's 200:1 water:bleach solution was sprayed on the afflicted area chiefly, and lightly on the rest of the casing.  A hydrogen peroxide/water solution was also applied to the afflicted area.  This was an act of desperation.

The colonized casing surface turned blue within a few hours, a sign of bleach damage.  slowly the blue faded (it never faded completely) except for the most heavily damaged area, which remains a deep blue.

The mycelium continued to colonize the surface, and finally began to pin.  A good number of pins formed, considering the damage.  They have grown slowly, and now things look bleak.

The maturing pins are about 5 days old.  The bottoms of the stems are the thinnest part, and fears that every pin is a large abort run high.

The temp in the fruiting chamber is unfortunately ~80 degrees at all times. It gets about 5 fresh air exchanges per day.  The humidity is 90+% all day, because the casing itself seems to raise the humidity all the time.  The casing gets 12 hours of indirect light per day.

the strain is cambodian, the casing is coir/verm, the substrate is crumbled rye berry cakes.

Any help with this casing?  Is there a way to save the pins?  Notice that all the pinheads are sort of dark, except ONE fatass with a very light looking cap.  Is that the only one that hasn't aborted?!!!?  that would be a travesty.
