Air circulation in incubator or no?
    #1654099 - 06/22/03 05:10 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

Hello!

The incubator is air tight currently. How necessary is air circulation? I know too much CO2 and not enough O2 slows down growth. Should I poke a hole with a filter, or just leave it air tight? How much will it affect the rate of growth?

Too much CO2 will cause small caps and long stems. It may also stump growth and cause too many aborts.
I'd suggest fanning or some kind of air circulation. I currently have a cool mist but find that it's way too drying on the casings so the cool mist only needs to be on 10 minutes every couple of hours.

Hmm. My question was in reference to an incubator, and it seems you're referring to a terrarium. How about in the incubator during colonization?

Air exchange in your incubator is important, but not in the volumes needed for a terraium.

Mycelium does need air exchange and does so through the holes of your jars, but again, not in the volumes a terrarium needs.

You could go for days without exchanging the air in your incubator, but I usually exchange air daily. Not because it's necessary, but as a reminder to inspect my growing areas.

My dawg's is tight, he checks growth 1/week. No problems with about 80-90 jars at one time. Stacked 5 high..........

If using PF Tek, how much air do you really think comes through the hole --> Vermiculite --> Tin Foil before actually getting to your colonizing cakes? Don't worry about it overtly.
