blueing cakes inside pf jars...

my neighbor's rabbit said he had an almost colonized b+ cake and is finding some light blue "splotches" on the top (actually bottom- they are flipped). He's wonder if this is normal blueing and he shouldn't be concerned. The bunny thinks that might be a possibility since the cakes have shrunk considerably since colonization.
Hopefully the spots are not contams. They seem to be localized and no signs of spreading.
Ideas?

<the cakes have shrunk considerably since colonization From that statement id say these cakes have been colonizing for a long time in a dry area I believe the bluing you are see is that the mycelium is simply drying out good luck should still colonize fine

the rabbit is wondering if it may be contams...would the blue/green area grow quickly or slowly?

Ok, now how far along are these jars? When you flipped them does the cake slide, possible bruising if it were to hit the top? You definetly dont want to see those spots spreading, especially if it is not directly on good white mycelium.
Agreed that it could be a sign of drying out, or possibly from too much heat, although I have never seen the latter cause bluing, usually it dies and turns brownish yellow.

Hey, I know someone who has the same problem with one particular strain : Koh Samuis. His KS cakes always reach 100% colonization without any contam and then, after a couple more days, the bottom of the cake start to turn blue. He has 3 KS syringes and all syringes do that.
He asked CaptainMax if it's a problem or not and here's was he told him :
Quote:
The fact that the cakes are colonizing 100% is proof positive that the syringes are not contaminated. At that point, you should birth them. Don't wait another couple days for the middle to be done...it prolly already is and they don't stop growing just because you birthed it. It will continue to colonize if there is any substrate left. When left in the jar, the aggressive Koh Samui mycellium on the outside is still trying to grow and is bruising itself against the glass. You can try to cutting that area away. Birth them earlier.

Here's some pics of how most of his PF-TEK Koh Samui jars looks like, 2 or 3 days after achieving 100% colonization.
