Psychologists on Shroomery
    #15843491 - 02/21/12 04:40 PM (12 years, 4 days ago)

Are there any psychologists or anyone that works in the field on the Shroomery?

Personally I'm really considering psychology as a major, just cause it seems like a fairly reliable job, is interesting and could help people. I never looked at this way before really but I am introverted and think it may actually br an advantage in that I can analyze with people who want help.  I know there's probably some hate for psychology on Shroomery and I don't like everything about it but it is something that seems like it could be interesting to me.

Reliable job?  If you mean psychologists are in demand...not so much.

If you enjoy it, go for it...prob going to have to get your PhD to do something with it, just fyi.

Psychology is an EXTREMELY overpopulated major for the "psychogist" job market.  That said, a friend got his masters in counseling psychology and he seems to be doing okay working for some counseling group.  Bottom line, a bachelors in psych is worthless for getting a job in it.  There are a TON of chicks in psych though.  :jellyfish:

Hear that.  Well I guess what I mean is it seems like there's always something going on in psychology in different towns, and people looking for psychologists. I think it seems more than possible if worked at.  What do I know though,

Hear that. That's the only thing that concerns me I guess is that there really are tons of people in the field.  But again there do seem to be a lot of errors related to psychology to possibly work in. I guess I'll see how I feel about it down the road, I don't know what else to even try honestly other than music.

I could potentially try blogging on the internet but that is even way more saturated than psychology lol.

Yeah, despite what people claim here, you should go after whatever interests you as it is a rarity that you end up in a job related to your major unless you're accounting or something.  People who are like YOUZ MUST GO BUSINESS IF YUZ WANNA EAT make me :trololol:  I was a liberal arts major/psych minor and I'm surviving just fine.

Most of the successful psychologists I know have their own practice/business of some sort.  More than the majority work in drug/addiction treatment.

My advice is to look at what you want in life...don't force the college route.  It's overrated and becoming a saturated market.  If you want to go into psych then do it.  But if you're trying to find an interesting major because you think college is the way to go, save your money and do a little more soul searching.

Take care to distinguish between psychologists and people with psychology degrees.  Most people with psychology degrees are not psychologists.  There are far more social workers with psychology degrees than there are psychologists with psychology degrees.

Psych for undergrad is basically just a liberal arts degree.

MA or MS in Psych and you're probably doing research somewhere.

PHD and you're probably running the study that the Master's dudes are conducting.

My favorite classes in college were psy classes.

Ha. Do you really think I would enter a 5 year degree, planning to become a psychologist, without even knowing how to? After a year of honours and after signing on to the APA I will be a psychologist.
And you couldn't be more wrong. Social workers have entirely different degrees and lines of work. I speak from experience, having worked as a "welfare officer" alongside fully qualified social workers, who said my future psychology degree would not get me into the field of social work, nor hold an official title of "social worker". I believe you need to do a "bachelor of social work" before that can happen. Also, if they were so similar, I would have been able to incorporate my textbook psychology with my welfare position, however the theories and paradigms are entirely different, to the point where a "qualified social worker" did not even know the meaning of the term 'Aphasia'

Your best bet is to get a B.S. in psychology.

Pay the money to get your PsyD, then open a practice.  Listen to people bitch and moan for $200/hr.

I work in a very specific field of psychology. Clinical is dull and daft, but there are hot chicks in the programs, not to mention the job sucks. Research is where it's at. To do any serious work in the field you need a PhD. from a top 100 program, the better the rank, the better your prospects.

What is your ultimate goal? Chasing a career because you like the undergrad major is stupid and naive- I hate to be the one to say this.

Feel free to ask questions.

Like any other area of science, you'll be judged on the papers you publish and the work that you do.  The name of the school is far less important than who your mentor is and your research experience.

psychology is not a real science, it sucks ass.  i am taking time out of my psych major to sit on my arse for a year and terrorise online communities.  in my other free time, I am doing a foundation year in group analysis and teaching maximum security psychiatric patients.

you dont need a degree, if you have the capability and aptitude for the work, you can do it without some pleb giving you a certificate that says so.
