How would you grow 100 lbs of mushrooms?

Let's say that's a life goal of yours.
How would you do it? I think I'd do a room full of straw beds. It would probably take months though.
I was discussing this with a friend today and he said it's impossible. I told him if you really tried, I'm sure you can do it somehow.

You could do it with approximately 1000 lbs of Cracked Corn, which would cost about $100. Cooked, that would be about 1600 quarts of spawn, or 400 gallons.
400 gallons = 92400 cubic inches. With casings 5" deep that would be 18480 square inches, or 128 square feet, approximately 11.5 feet X 11.5 feet

Yeah! I like to see mathmatics used to answer cultivation questions. 5 shrooms to you.
Now how much time would that take?

I plan on doing a few pound operations here and there. Gotta get some experience under my belt first. But once I have my mind set on something, its going to get done. I plan on dropping 500-600 dollars on a grow setup whenever I feel comfortable with my cultivation skills. *i'm a newbie right now so it'll be a while ;P*

I'm sure all the NARCs are putting you nicely in their wish list... bragging about "pounds" operations is probably not so healthy. read these wise words... http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum2&Number=1303802

B/c i'm an aspiring mycologist has nothing to do with illegal operations. I come to this site to learn valuable mycology information. My post implied nothing illegal.

That's fine that it didn't imply anything illegal, that doesn't mean they can't investigate those that "imply" about growing pounds and pounds of "legal" mushrooms. It's just not direct evidence but it's enough for investigating. Do you want that kind of attention?

Thx for looking out for a fellow grower though. If I did grow illegal mushrooms I'd probably take your advice ;D.

no problem - just want to make sure that your shitake farm is not destroyed for evidence. that would be very sad.

It wouldn't be hard, but you'd need some form of massive air exchange, and probably a cooling system 'cause it would get pretty hot in there....
Composting might be the easiest way to go -- you can do *bales* of straw at a time.

Cracked corn, at least arround here, sells for the same price per per pound as Cracked corn, and should yeild more per dollar spent.
On the other hand, straw can be pasteurized faster than corn can be sterilized, so a CC/straw combo would cost a little more, and take up quite a bit more space, it would be alot easier, and take alot less time.
As for air exchange and humidity, it would probably be enough to crack a window, cover the floor with plastic and wet pearlite, and put a few fans in the room. If the room had a dirt or cement floor you wouldn't even need the plastic and pearlite, just keep the floor wet.

I have seen a few operations in my day. Two that stood out used an old refrigerator and one of those rubbermaid stand-up, self-contained closets. Each had several shelfs with drip sheilds for each shelf. Humidifiers pumped air into the compartment above the top drip sheild. Air and water exited through a hold in the bottom. With both the humidifier was housed in a bottom compartment. The water dripped into a bucket or such. This isn't as large as some operations but both were done in apartments and could produce your desired yeild a few years at most.

You really only need about 2 foot of over head space to grow a casing,so I'd opt for the dresser approach. An 11.5X11.5 square on top of another one, prolly get 4 or 5 in a single room. Line the bottom of the trays / shelves with plastic and then layer with perlite, fix a light to the bottom of each tray for the casing below it, suck air through the top with a fan and Pipe in an ultrasonic from the bottom. Set a space heater next to the box and let 'er rip. Could prolly put some HUGE Bulk substrate casings or a lot of little 11in. X 9in. casings in there. I'd never go with the big casing idea though, what you gonna do with contams? I'd say a whole bunch of easily managable 11 X 9 in. casings would work better.

Rent an apartment for six months.
Run a HEPA filter full time in the house.
Buy a few indoor greenhouse's from ebay.
Use straw logs. The tek writer got a 17lb first flush from his. 4' log I believe.
100lbs is like a ton of shrooms. You could never have a setup that dried them fast enough, without taking up a large amount of space.
AFOAF would definately use straw logs. Quite a bit easier and more foolproof than casings.
You need a few days at least to do the initial setup, please a nice bit of space. 20-30, 3-4' logs should do 100lbs at least (wet).
I'm tinking prep time would be a solid weekend. Straw would be messy.
Just removed the contam'd logs and you'd be set.
You would have to spend about 2 months or so getting the grain to spawn setup. You would definately want to look into G2G, or at least a lot of syringes.
