Moe's Tek Outdoor grow Southern California *PICS*
    #16525525 - 07/13/12 01:05 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

About two months ago, we( user JuneBug and I) inoculated a rubber maid container with shooting stars liquid culture that we previously prepared. Well, about a week later there was healthy growth but we spotted some trich ....

We let it continue colonizing mainly because we were too lazy to dispose of it. At around 40% colonization the trich was taking up a 1/4 of the cake. I then remembered moe's tek.

So we gathered some horse poop; saturated it (no pasteurization needed outdoor); then crumbled up our contaminated cake and put it at the base of a tree that commonly gets alot of mushrooms (humid and shaded). Covered it with some dirt, verm, and horse poop. Well yesterday a rain storm had come to town and it was like Florida man. 90 degrees F out and raining; highest humidity we've seen in a long time down here. We knew the mushroom patch was lovin it.

We've sort of been neglecting the patch lately. Watering it daily most of the time, but we've skipped 2 days or so and its been hot lately. But to our surprise this morning day 2 of the humidity; we see PINS! Our first outdoor pins. I cant explain the excitement. We will post a grow log when they are done growing, but I couldn't wait to post the pin pics. Here you go:

Sorry to revive an old thread, but after taking a trich contaminated jar and doing the above described, would the fruits be safe to eat?

Yes just make sure to make tea with them with boiling water to kill any germs, I mean they did grow in a literal shitpile outside :laugh2:

I hear that

I was referring more to some things i read about tossing trich jars immediately because, say you birthed it and one side had some jungle green patches but the other side had beautiful looking mushies, well you could still get sick because even though it wasn't green at the mushroom the nutrients/bad stuff in the mold can travel through the mycellium.

I read that a lot and took it to heart, now that i have contaminated jars of my own i'm reading way more about burying it outside. So i was just wondering how it was magically safe now. Guess green molds die outside and the healthy mycellium survives "purifying" it?

No, outside the balance changes.

Indoors we have made a niche environment for contamination and our desired fungi alike.

Green molds do even better outside but they are not posing the same risk

I get the first half, can you clarify how the green mold thrives even more outside yet it doesn't pose the same risk as inside? That means the only danger was from getting the green mold spores in the house/grow area?

I thought you could get physically sick/worse from eating contams.  But, the more i research, pennicillium may be more common that trich, and i would assume you would be a-ok from eating pennicillium. Just a guess.

Why would you eat either of them in the first place :uhoh:

Green mold spontaneously happens to your indoor grow and you didn't have a contaminated substrate already in your house

Now you have a contaminated substrate in your house. Think it will be easier to see green on your next project? Probably considering you made a mold factory

Outdoors is already completely covered in green mold but it would rather thrive where it prefers to grow.

Indoors you made a niche for mold and mushrooms. If you let mold win it will. Outdoors mold is already winning but you make a niche for mushrooms

That is almost no clarification to me, more like riddles.

I am asking a specific question that you simply answered "why would you want to", and i am asking directly because of safety and other places in here where it is said that that is completely safe.

Obviously i don't think so and am still very much in need of clarification.

I've never seen anyone willingly eat trich or penicllium so it's a genuine question why the fuck would you chose to eat contamination?

If I ever see mushroom growing that's obviously fucked and infected I don't eat it

mushrooms grow outdoors next to other kinds of molds all the time, doesn't mean you're eating mold, There's mold growing in apple orchard doesn't mean apples are moldy.

when it comes to indoors you just don't want to propagate mold. you started with none around but some happened showed up from time to time,

so why would you want to start with mold on purpose being around and then hope none shows up.

So, lets talk clarification,    you say now i have a moldy substrate in my house, yes i do, however :

my shiitake that has jungle green is protected by micropore tape, meaning if i researched the micron size of the tape and the green spores i may find that it is completely contained, i have no idea.

My friend growing her cubes, hers dont' have micropore tape but there is the dry verm layer of PF tek. That wont trap much, but i think on the closet shelf its still safe until she (carefully and deliberately) disposes of it. That's not the point.

Why is it so popular to bury contaminated jars? Most of the threads i see they don't do it for fertilization, they do it in hope of fruiting/saving it. Many people are under the assumption, even RR said you can eat the fruits.

So why is outside different? A real explanation please.

I see what you're saying now, i understand.

No, its more of a "if it fruits even a little its better than throwing it in the trash" and my friend on her first grow has jungle green in 9 of 35 of her jars. This isn't ideal, this is, how do things work so that i can dispose of it properly, but at the same time, there are tons of threads about planting it outside and being safe to eat.  9 jars (possibly more by time of full colonization) is worth digging a hole for. All i'm sayin.

because they're contaminated so if you try to fruit them indoors you have to remove the filter or the dry verm barrier

at least outdoors they have a chance of growing, and if they do grow it's not like the green mold is growing on the mushroom itself.

indoors the green mold would be growing on the cake the whole time it made the few mushrooms it was going to make

outdoors is just a slightly better option for contaminated things than the trash can

ohhhhhh that makes perfect sense, so if you removed whatever filter you use, the green mold spores would spread inside.

But they're already abundant outside so who cares, try your luck see if they fruit. worst case it will fertilize the soil.

But, to you, you still wouldn't eat the fruits that popped up? That's my real question. She has 9 of 35 jars contaminated and if she can safely make an outdoor bed and eat all growth, that'd be better.

yes

every mushroom that grows outdoors is growing on contaminated substrate, as long as the mushroom itself isn't gross or moldy it's fine.

if a moldy cake makes a shroom it's because it had enough health left in it to make a shroom. now if the shroom has a bunch of green mold on it, you'll obviously avoid it.

if you see 2 mushrooms growing outside that both look nice do you really go examine the ground it came from to make sure there's no mold close to it? no.

Bod,

I'm still unclear on one part of this if you would be so kind :

I see it recommended to sterilize the jar (killing off the bad contams and the good mycellium) before taking them outside, opening, and burying. I see that more often than anything else, and i'm all for that, in fact i'm reading trich mycellium is white or clear, and only when it sporulates is it green like that. So makes perfect sense.

However i did come across a rash of articles that made it sound like they are burying the contaminated jars *without sterilizing*, in hopes that the cubensis mycellium will survive and with some TLC may fruit seasonally.

Am i confusing and blending the two? I know we talked about "outside at least it has a chance to grow" which basically answers my own question, but why am i seeing so many adamant stances of "no, sterilize it, kill everything, then dump it."

Say if someone brought some jars outside, say today is a windy day, very clear wind direction.  What if someone were to open those jars while staying up-wind of them, and pouring all the BRF cakes in a hole, mixing it, covering it with manure? Maybe continue to work outside for a while in the wind, when that person went back inside they would be no more unclean than usual, grow area is protected, correct?

Just don't want to overlook anything.

FINALLY!! After what seems like days i find something like what i'm looking for, searching "burying contaminated substrates" does indeed point out like 1600 results, as one jerk so eloquently put it, however none of them are worth reading. Seriously, half of them aren't finished or lead to stupidity.

So for anyone who has been searching in vain for hours and days on details of a successful outdoor grow using spent contaminated cakes, to you my friend, I gift you this : https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13054218/fpart/all/vc/1

here's some search tips for next time so you spend your time a lot more effectively

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php
go here first of all so you can choose some options.

right away on the left side limit your searches to "mushroom cultivation"
that weeds out a lot of shit

on the right side type

ground outdoor contaminate words like that rather than "burying contaminated" since someone has to spell bury burying or buried correctly or even say that word at all. even searching dig or hole might be a good option

if you are looking for a TEK look for main posts, and more than 200 words since if it's worth while of a post to read it probably has more than 200 words.

you can include has images if you want since pictures help

Only one result per thread since why would you want more than one of the same thread in the results if you're looking for a guide.

sometimes I'll do newer than 5 years but for this maybe it doesn't really matter

I did "outdoor contaminated" since if you're interested in outdoor use of contaminated cakes that's the words that will be common among all the threads while words like bury might not be

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/dosearch.php?where=body&tosearch=main&how=all&words=outdoor+contaminated&minwords=200&limit=25&forum=f2&showmain=1&image=1&sort=r&way=d

with a few adjustments I dialed results down to only 81 to sift through, and the one you posted is on the first page of my results.

the search engine works beautifully if you take the time to do some critical thinking
