Fascinating!
-------------------- While I understand the reasoning behind stating "everything I say is a lie,"
I shall say that everything I say is truth, for I believe I am doing nothing morally wrong, and those who would punish one for partaking in the personal use of substance to alter their experience of the one life they live have a more damaged mind than any I've seen under the influence.
Relax, everything is fine...

Put a magnet to it if it's metallic it will stick and most likely is from outer space. Volcanic rock I'm pretty sure is never metal.

Yea more than likely. Heavy menerals like iron or nickel sink to the earths core, when we find metal deposits they are mixed with many types of other and are never solid peices of mass, finding a large chunk of metal rock on earth surface usual means it didn't orginate from this planet

Hiking is great, never know what you'll stumble upon. I would love to have a souvenir from the cosmos...

i'd think it's an iron ore like hematite..., meteorites are not my specialty though. it does have pitting consistant with having been formed inside of a gas pocket. does it have an obvious entry oriented position where the material is worn more than the back and different from the obvious pitted areas? the county/state and surrounding geologic features it was located in can be really helpful.

dude all the rocks on earth are from the cosmos. they're all infinitely unique and special even those fucked up pebbles in your driveway, man. But I guess there are a few small granules that possibly could have identical molecular arrangements its POSSIBLE but Id say most rocks are pretty fucking unique man...

You're right, when you look at it that way I should have said "a souvenir that didn't originate on Earth." Rocks rock

wow that thing is huge f it is a meteorite. It is probably worth a pretty penny. I wouldnt sell it though.
Take it to your local college and they will do their thing and tell you if it is. hopefully for free. Maybe track down a grad student or somethingand buy him a sack in exchange for the test.

Wow that's cool dude, I wish I would find a meteorite in my endeavors hiking!
-------------------- I think people have a very narrow conception of what is possible with reality, that we're surrounded by the howling abyss of the unknowable and nobody knows what's out there.
Our world is in crisis because of the absence of consciousness. And so to whatever degree any one of us, can bring back a small piece of the picture and contribute it to the building to the new paradigm, then we participate in the redemption of the human spirit, and that after all is what it's really all about.

that's a volcanic rock for sure. the color does indicate rich in iron (it weathers red)
i'd call it a 'black vesicular trap'
plus a meteorite would be smooth from the friction of entry into the atmosphere...
