What to feed farm animals to make them produce shrooms?
    #1651135 - 06/21/03 03:35 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Good shrooms grow in fields near my house but going on someone elses property is risky and a pain in the ass. I have horses and read that shrooms will also grow nicely on there crap as well. So to get to the point how can i make them do it if there is such a way. I have read that it is the type of grain you feed them at one web site but in high school my hippie horticulture teacher told us that all you have to do is fertilize the field with a 10-10-40 fertilizer but i dont see how that could cause shrooms to grow so if anyone has any input on this matter i would love to hear it because i really dont even know if it is possible

The cubes will not really grow on horse shit. Only with in vitro cultivation will they grow from pasturized wheatstraw with chorse manure. Thye will not grow directly from horse.

mj It is extremely rare and then only a few shrooms period.

I really wish I would have taken pictures of the cubensis I found in horse manure. I was finding them in regular horse pies as well as the compost pile. The conditions must have been perfect because there would be new shrooms there everyday.

One feature of the cubensis from horse dung that I noticed was the shorter stems. Sometimes the cap would be rather larger while the stem would be only 2.5-3 inches long.

The animals eat grain and it comes out in their shit. Spores land near the old shit and develop into mycelium and fruit. So they need to be fed lots of grains. I think some commercial feeds have antifungla agents so maybe if you could find some natural stuff would be alot better.

Thats not exactly how it works man.

The cows eat the spores that are on the grass. The spores incubate inside the cow's digestive system. Then they shit and the mycelium fruits.

feed em a whole buncha grain from a health food store, mix with a few dried mushies.

kinda expensive. and pooey tasting...lol

if you have a few spare mushies around, you can always tap the caps over a dung heap for good measure.

personally, id just buy a grow kit.

good luck.

"The cows eat the spores that are on the grass. The spores incubate inside the cow's digestive system. Then they shit and the mycelium fruits."

I doubt spores could survive a cow's digestive system. Spores definitely wouldn't be "incubating" in a highly acidic environment. Most mushrooms that grow on or near dung are there because of the wind. Thats what spores do, they ride the wind. Peace.

That is only one method of spore dispersal. They also eat shrooms but the majority of mushroom which grow form manure come from manure falling where the spores are deposited on the grass and emerging five to six weeks later on the outer edges of the manure heaps.

Tjey also grow under the manure and I have pictures to show of that if you need to see the other side of cow shit, oops

>Spores definitely wouldn't be "incubating" in a highly acidic environment.

The pH in cow?s rumen is around 7, which is neutral (like potable water)

"In addition to reducing the size of feed particles, the mouth aids in digestion by adding saliva to the feed. Cows will produce 20-35 gallons of saliva a day. The saliva helps moisten the feed. Saliva also contains sodium bicarbonate to keep the rumen at the proper neutral pH (6.5-7.2) for good microbial growth. Much of the water contained in saliva is recycled by the cow. "

Cows do not have stomach acid. That is why they have a what is it 7 chambered stomach. I guess but the chew swallow, regurgtate, chew swallow.

However, Anno,

cows do eat spores and they do germinate in the cow's stomachs and they do drop fresh manure with shrooms coming up within 12 to 24 hours after the manure is shitted out. Here at my site are a group of photos of Copelandia tropicalis, from a single cow pie photographed every three dasy for 21 days. I came back every three days, removed the leaves off of the cowpie and came back three days later and repeated the process. The shrooms appeared for a period of 21 days on this particular cow pie.

What is intersting is the these Copelandia's usually appear primarily in decomposed manure of 4 to 6 weeks old dung heaps which have decomposed..

HEre is the URL for the fresh pile of manure which you can tell is fresh by looking at it.

http://mushroomjohn.com/cult2.htm

Here is a piece of a cowpie, dried after 4 weeks or more, flipped over to show how the baby shrooms are growing from mycelia on grass which attached it self to the bottom of the cowpie ont he grass where the spores had previously been deposited.
