Just on the smell factor of your post Hmmm, everybody seems to think manure smell awful. The truth is that it doesn?t Well, unless the manure is fresh out of the animals ass, it doesn?t have much of a smell at all. When dried, it has almost no smell. Composted manure smells like wet soil, nothing more. And, once colonized by a fungus, manure smells like fungus.

When dry cow dung is soak for over 24 hours, its smell returns. I've noticed this when working with manure. I once forgot I had shit soaking for a few days, and when I got to it and drain it, it smelled stronger then fresh shit, and also had a film on the top of the water. But, I left it out for a few days and now it looks and smells like rich black soil. Anyone know why soaking dry shit would cause the smell to return??

I think when it comes to STINK or SMELL we get caught up in the relativity of adjectives in the english language. The Flavor vs Odor Intensity With flavors there are Base-notes, Mid-notes and Top-notes. Indole & skatole are present in manure as base notes. They are crytaline materials that with melting points in excess of 90degs C. These are not liquids at ambient temps that readily volatize. The top notes however are things like alcohols, ketones and aldehydes which more readily vaporize. You might have a hand full of earthy smelling stuff and note think it smells like shit, but that doesn't necesarrily mean the indolic base notes are gone. By soaking it you are dissovling the water soluble compounds..they go from a solid into a liquid now they can more readily be released into the air. Letting it sit may lead to new microbial activity resulting in fresh some new flavors including the more volatile top notes.

Shit has no strong odor. In most carnivore's the smell factor comes from e. coli bacterium and its by-products. I had to make some cultures of different bacteria in microbiology. I swabed the handle of the toilet at the mens faculty washroom at college and grew that culture. It incubated over the weekend and when we opened up the incubator on Monday ....that friggin smell would knock a buzzard of a gut wagon from 30 paces....I then ran the tests (gram negative...yadayadayada ...sure enuf - e. coli.

Well that's sorta my point. There's minimal tryptophan in manure because of the microbial activity...Take E. Coli for example; degrades tryptophan into indole. Has anyone tried indole and serine supplementation with there dung loving fungal friends?
