Is each mushroom an individual entity?
    #1647900 - 06/20/03 11:07 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

I was wondering: Is each mushroom an individual entity, or a part of a whole? In other words is each mushroom like in separate plant, or a branch from a larger plant? If I would like to, say, get the fastest maturing mushroom, could I just propagate spores from the first mushroom to mature? as you can tell I'm very new to this field

Thanks,

-ZTPH

Part of the whole mycelium; they all share nuclei. Spores or tissue work.

So with all the thousands of spores that could initially go into a culture, are the mushrooms the result of only one spore?

No, the hyphae (fungal cells) once germinated from spores, once they come in contact with each other, if genetically compatible, form clamp connections and nuclei are transferred throughout the networks of cells through a septum pore.

Nice n' detailed. In short, the mushrooms are one entity. That's why when you use a PF type tek, you innoculate at four points in the jar and they grow together. This probably is not a suitable advanced cultivation thread....

With PF tek you have thousands of spores that germinate and mate so you have many individual entities on it. Each shroom that forms could be a different individual. But if you clone a tissue from one of it and prepare 10 casings that form 1000 shrooms, they all belong to single individual entity.

The largest organism found in the world was a mushroom Armillaria ostoyae. A single entity covered 11500 acres!

lemunhead-some people inoculate through just one spot.

There's a typo in that article refrenced above. When it say's '2,200 acres', it should read 22,000 acres, making the Eastern Oregon field the largest organism ever found. I'll be flying over this field myself next week to take some aerial photos. If I get any 'interesting' ones, I'll post them here.
