Incubator - Wet
    #1648035 - 06/20/03 12:11 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

I searched for-but had to success finding in previous posts, a post about certain incubators accumilating water. My friends incubator for incubating his chickens eggs on his farm consists of a styrofoam cooler, a fish heater in a glass of water and that's it. Turn the heater on and let it heat up the cooler. Problem is with this method is the humidity. And there is a little water at the bottom of the cooler now. Would this be safe for the "eggs"? Or what should I do to get rid of the water?

its normal for a good incubation chamber to have condensation inside. the humidity in the incubation chamber helps keep the eggs moist during colonization, however, you dont want to have standing water at the bottom of the chamber due to the risk of contams.

you could drill a couple drainage holes in the bottom of the chamber and cover them with poly fill or coffee filters.

What? Anyway, I have an idea. I'm just going to go buy another identical cooler, they were only a buck. I'll poke some small holes in the corners of the incubator and set it in the new cooler. So it'll keep the temp steady and drain the water. Thanks for the suggestions though.

you can use a big gatorade bottle or coke bottle instead of a glass

here I will give you my best kept secret tek for incubator! You won't get any water at all and you won't have to drill hole and buy another tub.

items needed:
storage tub $5-10 (I use rubbermaid 18 gal)
heat pad $20-35 (I use sunbeam king size heating pad)

what you do is put the heating pad in the tub or under the tub to get the temp to where you want it,I always put it under the tub and set it to low for me and it take it to 86f and that is when it is set at low setting and if it get too hot(summer) u can put a towel over top of the heating pad and put it under the tub.

you use no water so noway they will get wet and it is the easiest to do compaired to other tek where u need to buy extra tub, drill holes and add water and hope it hopes it(no leaks) andyou don't have to add hydrogen peroxide to the water cuz there is none.

I hope this helps

I have also had the same experience with a heat pad. I actually tried a heat pad and a heat blanket, and they were both
innaccurate and the temperature fluctuated way tooo much. My solution was a bin inside a bin like most say to do it-- and
that worked the best. Good luck to you on finding the best incubation technique, I'm looking for smaller and waterless incubator
if anyone had any suggestions

IMHO my iguanas works great! He bought two identically sized rubbermaids and in one put a submersible fish tank heater inside one, filled it with water and a whole bottle of h2o2 and set the other tub inside that one. The interior one floats a bit but my iguana just keeps it packed with jars to keep the tub down. Then to get a stable temp he threw a clean blanket over the whole thing and it stays nice and constant @86*f (+/- 1*). From the heat inside the inncubator he has noticed that condensation does happen but is neglagible. Worked good for him anyway...

Yeah I tried everything to regulate the heat pad temperature. Just didn't work. This method I'm using now works best for me out of all methods-(I've yet to try the standard incubator - 2 bins, fish heater, ya know - because I don't wanna drop anymore money on this project this summer) But I can spare another $1 which seems the best method right now. I really appreciate all the input though. Thanks.

Hell, man, just crack the lid on the incubator a smidgen. The excess moisture will vent out the top. Works like a charm.

Well since this is a styrofoam cooler that won't really work without letting out all of the heat too.

AFAOF was having problems it seemed with contamination even using tyvek and such in glass jars with PC them. "She thinks" its attributed to the styrofoam cooler with a cup of water and fish tank heater. It would always get water standing on the bottom and very moist. She wishes she spent the $3.96 X 2 for identical plastic tubs and $14.99 for a adjustable submersible water heater. Dialing in the heater seemed to be little tricky but she thinks she's got it.

There's a tech published with the same idea in mind, wishes did that first, will save alot of headache and you can store ALOT more in the new container.

Its got to be better than having all that moisture.

well you cut a hole in the top that is big enough to hold the jug of water then you put the heater in the jug and set it to the temp you want and jug with the water are outside the incubator there will be no water in it if you look at the pic i posted you can see what i'm talking about.

And thanks for the tip by the way-I just dont think my styrofoam cooler can support that kind of weight.

the pic in my 2nd last post.there is another tek i saw before they used an pickel jar(a bigger one) and cut/drilled a hole big enough for the fishtank heater and then put the heater in the lid where the hole was cut and then sealed it with silicon then filled it up with water and put the top on tight set it to the temp you want and thats is it
