yes, it was an update to the mmgg (do a search) but it's basically not needed, and has been replaced by dunking.

dunk your cakes in clean water before each flush. good luck!

REHYDRATING YOUR CAKES
& UTILIZING THE ?WELL?

A cake?s life depends on the nutrients that are left in it, but mainly on the amount of moisture held inside it. The more moisture that a cake holds inside, the more flushes you will get from that cake, and the more mushrooms per flush with the least amount of aborts. If your cakes dry out, there is really no hope for them.

Unless your cakes came with a built in well, this procedure is not necessary and is up to you if you want to implement it.
There is a risk of it not working, depending on how careful you are. There is also a risk of you hurting your cakes. The only necessary supplies for this procedure is a straw and the same syringe you used to inject your cakes when you very first started (assuming there?s no spores left in it.) or a dropper. A thick straw works best, if you can find one. The ones at ?Jack in the Box? work great, they are blue and very thick.

If your cakes did not include a ?well,? this is what you will need to do.

1a. One way to do this is to flame-sterilize a drill bit that is slightly skinnier than the straw you are going to use. Test by fitting it inside your straw.

2a.With your clean hands use the drill bit to make a hole exactly in the center of the top of your cake. Be gentle and straight. Make the holes about ?? inch deep, making a circular (drilling) motion as you make the hole. Pull the drill bit out in a circular motion also.

3a.Now carefully fit the straw into the hole in a circular motion, keeping in mind that you want a tight fit that in going to seal water inside. If you have half-pint sized cakes then watch out not to go down too far and break the bottom, which would cause the water to leak out.

4a.You are going to wait about 3 days before you test for leaks. This will allow the mycelium to heal where the straw was inserted and will create a seal around the straw. However, do put only a little bit of water in there so that you can barely see the water line at the top of your cake, until you test for leaks 3 days later and fill it up all the way. Look at the pictures below.

Make sure that your chamber has at least 95-100% humidity or more in these 3 days.....In 3 days test the straws for leaks. If they have a leak, flip the cake upside-down to empty the water from the straw. Absorb the water that leaked on the cake with a paper towel, by just touching a tip on the water. Put your straw in a little bit more (gently in a twisting motion) and give it another day before you test for leaks.
Use your syringe or dropper to fill up the straw with clean water. Stand watch with paper towels. If within 5 minutes, no water leaks, then you have a successful water reservoir that will provide your cakes with added moisture. Refill your straw with clean water daily or as needed.

Another way of doing this without a drill bit.

1b.This way requires no drill bit. All you need is a thick straw and your syringe or dropper.

2b.Grab your straw and in a straight circular drilling motion, gently drill it through the top middle of your cake about ?? inch deep. Pull it out also in a circular motion.

3b.There should be substrate inside the straw. With your clean fingers, remove this substrate by rotating the straw in your fingers, while squeezing. Pushing it out through the straw.

4b.Once it?s out, then gently stick the straw back into the hole in a rotating circular motion. Push it in so that it has a good seal, watching out not to go too far into the cake and therefore breaking the bottom of the cake causing the water to leak out.

5b.You are going to wait about 3 days before you test for leaks. This will allow the mycelium to heal where the straw was inserted and will create a seal around the straw. Test for a tight seal, keeping plenty of paper towels by hand, to absorb any leaks quickly, before they harm your cake. Use your syringe or dropper to fill up the straw with clean water.
