southern oregon hunting
    #16491837 - 07/06/12 09:21 PM (4 years, 4 months ago)

does anyone have any expirience hunting actives in southern oregon? specifically the rogue valley area. i have done research but have come up with conflicting reports as to whether or not there are any actives in this area. i know they grow on the coast, and generally not this far inland, but its a kind of micro climate here. any help is appreciated! thank you!

I have found Cyansecens in the Willamette valley so I know they grow here, I would scope out spots now that have hardwood chips in them and make a mental note to check that spot again in the Fall once the rains come again.

I would look in parks near rivers, they use a lot of the downed trees and limbs to make cover mulch. Cyanscens love alder chip. Look in any place that has hardwood chips. Maybe even the college campuses.

Quite possibly, and it's worth looking around, but your results will be far more relaible along the coast.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Sorry for the thread-necromancy but for posterity I wanted to let everybody concerned (and those finding this thread during research) know that I photographed three colonies of P. cyanescens in Jackson county today.

I wouldn't hold out much hope there unless it rains for a good week again soon.

You might find light mushroom activity but you're likely to have far better luck in irrigated landscaped areas. If you have access to pastures that have gotten plenty of water you might try for Panaeolus there also. In all it's mostly been too dry for too long to get into full swing from just that last storm.

Do you have other shots and does it smell distinctive? It isn't a magic mushroom. It is like Mycena or something in Marasmiaceae and so the smell would distinguish eg Mycetinis which are mainly the garlicky former Marasmius spp. Next poster probably just knows but there you have it.
