Identification Help: Leucoagaricus?
    #1648159 - 06/20/03 02:48 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Hellow Shroomers,

Today we found some interesting Lepiota mushrooms growing at the curb from a mix of tall grass and also mulch.

Many many Chlorophyllum molybdites were there,
-Amoungst the C. molybdites, i also found these three mushrooms.

The stems stained an orangish-red upon bruising.

Anyone have any clues?

Keep shroomin,
GGreatOne234

Interesting specimens, continuing Lepiota week.

I don't think those are Leucoagaricus. The Leucoagaricus I'm familiar with are all very smooth capped (not at all scaly like those) and even resemble Agaricus enough that you can see why they were named that. They also tend to not bruise, or only bruise slightly grayish, nothing so conspicuous as orangish-red.

They also don't key out very well in my books. The best match I've found is in Smith, and it leads to Lepiota flammeotincta, and I'm sure that's not what they are.

I'll be interested to see if anybody else has a good idea of what they are.

Happy mushrooming!

A bit of searching turned up this bit on Lepiota humei (Peele's Lepiota). Their not-very-detailed description doesn't match your specimens, but anybody who has actually hunted mushrooms knows that environmental factors can greatly change the appearance of a mushroom. The bruising reaction sounds similar.

Happy mushrooming!

He swears up and down that it is though;

read through this for a longer and more detailed story

He claims that it only grows in Florida.
