American Intelligence
    #1648015 - 06/20/03 02:03 PM (14 years, 7 days ago)

What do the following have in common?

* Chinese Embassy, Kosovo
* Pharamceutical Factory, Sudan
* 9/11, NY
* WMDs, Iraq

They are all blamed on "bad intelligence".

What are the intelligence agencies doing if they screw up in public on such a regular basis? Or are they just being scapegoated?

Seems like a good scapegoat when your trying to pull some shit, and get caught......it was "faulty intellegence". :tongue:

i'm just wondering for what dastardly underhanded reason the US wanted to blow up a pharmaceutical factory in sudan was. also the chinese embassy for that matter.

I think 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002. Considering the money that is siphoned into the various intelligence agencies, and considering their hardware, 4 mistakes of this scale in 5 years is remarkable. I mean, I couldn't see Mossad being this incompetent, if that was the case here.

I'm not saying there is a dastardly underhanded reason. Do you believe our intelligence services are incompetent enough to make these kind of mistakes?

apparantly yes, unless there is some hidden reason that the US would want to bomb a pharmaceutical factory and the embassy of a very close trading partner.

IMO..."Intelligence" is just a broad term that can be used a scapegoat, and also as an excuse to pour more funding into said agencies because "obviously" they were under funded or the security failures would never have happened...

Well in the case of the Pharmaceutical company -- Clinton is surmised by the right wing conspiracists to have been playing a "wag the dog" to distract from whatever sex scandal was playing at the time. "Look, look, scary terrorists."

With the embassy -- that's one hell of a mistake.

OK, what's wrong with our intelligence agencies then? Why can other countries seemingly do a much better job?

american intelligence agencies get plenty of funding. they're involved in so much shit all over the world, most of which, if it goes the way it's supposed to, we never even hear about. the world's a complex place, and a newsworthy error every couple of years shouldn't come as any surprise.

come on..."uh oh... sex scandal... i think i'll bomb a factory on the other side of the world to help get the heat off..."

Why can other countries seemingly do a much better job?

because they aren't trying to police the entire world.

You're not cynical enough. Have you seen "Wag The Dog"? Not saying it is "true", but it will raise your cynicism quotient.
