    #16465079 - 07/01/12 12:47 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

So its finally the time again, my fingers where itching so i checked some spots, and as always i found the first for the year at the same spot as every year.

Very early but the weather here was just perfect

Wow, that's early! And I noticed that t1mp5 also found a few in Scotland the other day... The earliest I ever found one was like 19:th July. And I'm further north than you guys.

I was looking for libs today when I was walking to my conocybe field (which also is a great liberty cap habitat), but didn't find any. Rather few mushrooms over all in the forest/fields. I found some chanterelles just beginning to pin, so the mushroom season is just starting.

Happy hunting everyone!

How long stretch of winter do you have in your region?

I am thinking that maybe the mycelium gets the chance to mature
earlier there, as opposed to Scandinavia where spring probably
comes a bit later.

I was out quite recently, only dung lovers, especially Panaeolus sp.
and a few Stropharia. And of course the parks and lawns are starting
to get crowded with Panaeolina. I will probably try 500+ meters later
this week when I get the time.

this year we just had a month of massive frost that was all, nearly no snow. this could be a reason, also the weather here got muddy very early,
we did´nt got a real summer here except of the rest of germany i think xD

and i find nearly not another panaeolus or something like that, mostly libs xD but not a lot.

BIG thanks for all your congrats!

I was a bit lazy with the updates so here are the pictures of my hunt from
the past week, first just the same cluster where i left some pins produced some more shrooms,
so i could go there 3 times and got enough for a trip.

then, yesterday, we found the first pins in a different location,

and today in another more far away. sure not much but definitely something.

Nice work! Haven't been able to check my patches been way too busy - makes me wonder if they are popping up here too - unfortunately on to Canada tomorrow for a month, probably will miss the best this time again :frown:

RIP Matt, your friendship and your contributions to the world of fungi will be missed. Unfortunately we never got to hunt together.

Great pics Fux, and niiiiiice selection!

It's raining heavy here (North England), with a few drier windows later this week. The season here is ramping up, and if we get some decent dry spells, there is gonna be a motherload or 2 just waiting for me...

Happy hunting Fux, and keep us updated!

hey, your posts are very inspiring!
I live in Germany too, and I just came back from a walk, but couldn't find any libs.
I live near the Sauerland, and I think it's still a tad too warm (and dry) over here. Maybe I have to go up to the higher Sauerland and check there...
Are you're spots mainly pastures, or do you prefer wild spots grazed by wild animals?
This is my first season of hunting, so I'm an absolute noob. But I did do my homework and read a lot
Keep posting your results man!

I was hunting today but found just some Stropharia Semiglobata, very jung fruitbodys, I don't think the season started here, I'll have to wait one or two weeks till they grow hopefully, the found fruitbodys of the S.S. give me hope that this is the right spot to look at.

nice to hear that i inspired you, as you live in the sauerland it should be no problem to find some nice libs, its not far away and it rained much if iam not totally wrong  you just have to get in the right habitat i think. I got spots which are just grazed by farm animals but i also got some completely wild spots. Animals are on nearly every field so its not the main factor, its more about finding those old sedge grass fields which are not fertilized.
keep up hunting iam sure you will find some soon

stropharia semiglobata are good indicators, i think if you find a few pins of them you also should find some libs soon :awesomenod: the season is on i would say.

--------

Went out yesterday to the same spot, as we left so many pins i knew it must have been well but it was just wonderful, mushrooms everywhere, young pins coming in loads

here some pics :

My guess is no, mainly judging by the somewhat translucent stipe.
Hard to tell what it is though.

@ Flux, Anglerfish and Oboy:

Thanks for your replies! Since I didn't find any other libs on this particular field, it probably isn't a liberty pin I suppose...
This is my first year hunting, and it's realy fun!

@Jefke thanks, hope the pics help you, so you can compare finds  -  i also would say its a conocybe pin, definitly no lib, but its close  so don´t give it up^^

@Libertyking-
I mostly look in fields where the grass is a bit longer, i don´t know but our shorter fields aren´t producing that fine, hope your season drops in this way the next days too

@psilosymon-
then i think the season should start in your area soon too,i heard from LK that he allready found his first one  i know canada is very big but that could be a sign

I learned something yesterday:
hunting on a Sunday + clear blue sky = frustrating!

The massive amount of hitchhikers and tourists (the sauerland is a pretty touristic area) made me feel unconfortable while inspecting the pastures. There were people EVERYWHERE!! :mad2:

On top of that the sun just annoyed me. I couldn't see shit and I feel like the sun helped the little ones to hide behide grass bushes.

But don't think I will give up that easy

The search must go on!

I guess you'd need a microscope to safely separate P. strictipes from P. semilanceata.
The variety of shapes among liberty caps is quite astonishing, and some specimens
will lack one or more of the typical features.

I guess you'd need a microscope to safely separate P. strictipes from P. semilanceata.
The variety of shapes among liberty caps is quite astonishing, and some specimens
will lack one or more of the typical features.

Thanks Anglerfish!

I've got another question (and please tell me if I should post this elsewhere):

There is a beautiful narrow valley where I live, and to me it looks perfect for finding liberty caps.
The only possible downside is that it is a limestone area.
Does someone know if this could scare away the libs(due to the lime raising ph)?
Mind that there are cows and horses grazing here, so lots of natural fertilization.
Here are some pics:

I would say the area looks good, but you got the point with the limestone, p. semilanceata avoids areas with limestone, you can try your luck but you should be miore succesfull in another area.

Success! The season has a lift off around here...

Yesterday I spotted an interesting pasture, very narrow next to a forest:

First thing I did this morning was try my luck, and yes indeed, lucky I was:

My first Liberty Cap ever! It's a special feeling isn't it?

There were a lot of small caps and pins, I realy had to watch not to crush them with my feet. On top of that, I only searched about 20% of the entire pasture. So my guess is that I will find at least 3 times as many on this particular field.

Some more pics:

I'll hope to find many more, and will post pics of my findings.

Good luck to all my fellow psychonauts!

I printed the 8 bestlooking caps, so if anyone is interested in liberty prints from lower saxony just hit me.

Good luck all hunters, this is going to be a good season=)

:thanx:

Yeah I can see that this becomes addictive, I must admit that I can only think about hunting atm.

I've grown mushrooms before, but picking in the wild is something different, it's like the mushroom has to show itself to you, and it only does if you look hard enough and bring the respect it deserves.

I realy had to inspect every grass bush to find them, and I think this is the key to success, at least where I live.

Now I'm hoping to find a couple of other magic fields and pick up some more gold

geez, I wish I could find some areas in Bavaria,so I could stop searching all over God's green creation for these little devils..I rode the train from Nuremberg to HOF to Bayrueth and back to nuremberg looking for good grasslands..tommorrow I'm traveling Bamberg to look there..lol..I've checked the bavarian and italian alps and parts of switzerland and the black forest...and in regensberg, munich and Ingolstadt and czech..and I've always had the most luck in Fux neck of the woods...all he has to do is look in his backyard :woodscream:  :dudewtf:  :psycrankey:  :gc:  I'm still grateful for him showing me where to look though.. :shoosh:  :super:

Don't give up dude, your efforts will be rewarded!

I was lucky that I found them on my second hunt. But I only have one field till now, and i spent like 5 hours in total on this particular pasture and got 4 dried grams.
Now I'm waiting till next weekend to return and pick some more, I want them all! But they realy like to hide in the grass (sedge?) bushes, I understand why they call it HUNTING.
I did some driving too, to look for some fields, I did like 30 kilometers up in the saurland, and spent more time in the car than on the fields, just stupid
Eventually I found the field 1km from my home!

My observation so far is:
*The field should be covered in shadows from nearby trees, or north facing, so that it stay nice and moist.
*It should be mossy. Some pastures are not very old, and you only see thin grass, and you see the earth between the grass.
*There should be big bushes of grass, I think these are the so called 'sedges' everyone talks about.
*They seem to like old rotting grass. SO look between the bushes.
*I don't bother to look when cows (or horses) are around. They are so curious and will come and smell you, or eat your dreadlocks, or panic when you fart and run over you! You don't want that...

I'm pretty sure there is a fat  patch of semi's fruiting right now within a couple of kilometres of most people reading this topic

Be aware that you probably have some woodlovers growing in your area, like
P. serbica/P. arcana and P. cyanescens. I'd definitely be on the lookout for
those species if I was in Bavaria.

Went to search the fields and found my first big find of the season

This field used to be a farm, but is now just a field that is grazed by wild animals. as you will see i found many different looking liberty caps here.

P. Semilanceata rainbow  :mushroom2:

Very strange looking liberty cap, almost through it away until i saw the purple-brown spore deposit on the stem

Thanks for all the help and advice fux234

Happy hunting everyone!!

trust me , if they were here I'd find em. Fux knows.. we went to a fields where they were actually growing the first time we met..and I had griped and griped and griped that I looked everywhere to him too..and he swore up and down that I just didn't know what I was looking for..but when me and him went to the feilds..he'll attest..I had NO problem finding and identifying...I go hunting for edibles all the time and have several chantrelle patches, king boletes, lepeoita's, califlower mushroom , weeping psatherylla, and even found some black morels, and some false one..I've also collected and properly prepared and used Amanita mucaria..and I've identified poisonous mushroom as well ..amd been able to identify between edible and poisonous russela's..just to name a small fraction of what I've hunted..(that covers like probably 10-15 percent of my knowledge) Although I would admit Fux is certainly more knowledgeable in some areas ..I think there's other areas in which my knowledge would probably surprise him in and I'm sure he'd tell you, I've been hunting for a while.. Me and my wife both hunt and I know the local area pretty well...and I've hunted in a lot of areas..I've gone litterally from one end of Germany to the other hunting and the best luck I've had as far as Psy's go is with fux. If they were right under my nose, I wish someone would come show me..lol..but as soon as I start my patches ..they will be..lol

Where would you guys recommend searching for woodlovers in germany? I've read to search parks and gardens, but the ones here in germany don't seem to have wood chips, just flowers with dirt around them.

Don't know about the woodlovers, but I might start a patch of Azurescens next year. Must be great to be able to pick them in your own garden

 jap i have to agree a bit with you but as the most fields here are fertilized you really have to drive a bit around, but hey no problem, iam a biker and i know my area better than anyone else :P
so purplemushroom is right, i think they have to much fertilization on their fields so he can´t finde some, here it was no problem for him.
But i also would say he should search after some woodlovers, he might have luck ^^

at first- congrats to your nice finds! :super:

i can say you go to the Schwarzwald if you look for woodlovers, the area near Stuttgart is very good and also they are growing near the coast (Hamburg ect.)
And if you wanna cultivate them: its a wonderfull thing, check my(not so well updated) thread about my expermiments with WL´s maybe you get some good infos and inspirations ^^

And now  i have to show you what i´ve done the last week, our fields are sooooo full i can´t belive it, check the best pics of my last 4 hunts and the loot, hope it makes your mouth watery :awesomenod: :

Thanks fux, idk if i want to travel tht far for woodlovers when theyre so many liberty caps here.

one weird thing i've noticed is the type of p. semilanceata that are most abundant in my field have an almost plane cap shape. but i am 100% sure these are liberty caps. i'll upload pictures later but i'm just wondering if anyone else has seen them like this

Yeah Fux!  :super:

Seems like you know some perfect spots. And the shrooms look pretty big and juicy, and a whole fucking lot of them!

I didn't find any new fields till now, and the few caps I found this weekend are pretty small. But I'm happy that at least I found some, ok for my first hunting season, and it's not over yet!

peace

edit: fux, if possible, please post some habitat shots, they are very helpfull for my learning process

yeah i got the same opinion, i just think a few woodlovers here would be perfect too  i think the libs you got are ok but post pics if you aren´t sure, its always better to get a second opinion. in my experience the size and shape of the libs is affected from where they grow (high gras, flat gras, moss ect) and i mostly find them wide opened ones in fields with high grass, could be also maybe the difference between p. semilanceata and p. strictipes but thats speculation

thanks  yeah its a lot growing up in here but i also make this since 3 years so i had much time to get experience and find fields which are also a bit more far away from my home ^^

hope you both also find some more fine spots :awesomenod:

i'm sure they are libs, i was just really surprised by the cap shape.

i think a lot of woodlovers would grow here if alder wood chip were more commonly used in gardens and parks.

I didn't get any habitat shots but here is my haul

I hunted for a long time and I finally got lucky. I had checked one field and was walking off thinking that it was yet another disappointment, but out of the corner of my eye I saw one little cap and thought "this could be it!" and sure enough it was  It was only a tiny area that produced anything, and the ground was soaking wet, but I pulled over 100 from the small area!

I think the biggest surprise for me was the amount of water there. I definitely think all the other fields I've been checking have been just too dry. The grass they were in was far greener than any other I'd been checking. So definitely look for the parts of the field where the water collects.

@monkeyguts:
you don't need a book man, all you need to know, and will ever need to know about cultivation is on this forum. The rest is experience... I successfully cultivated cubensis and panaeolus cyanescens with the information I found here.
But yeah, books are nice, you can never have enough of them

Ah, a fellow Belgian! I'm curious to hear in which region you found them... proficiat!

This is my first season that i'm actively hunting and actually finding something.
I got a nice field or 2 where they grow , it's waiting for colder weather now...
I also might've found some cyans but didn't pick any and couldn't take pics.
i'll go back tomorrow to make pics and pick a few.

nice  so you found them all in nearly one cluster? maybe the field is fertilized except some edges ^^ try to give the field a closer look maybe you´ll find some more  just can imagine hard that it is to dry anywhere atm.
good luck for your next hunts !

This field seemed abandoned for the most part. It was mostly wild grass and some other plants. It was kinda in a bad spot for any farming. I did check the field before and after I found them, but the grass was extremely tall and dense and I found only one mushroom (not a lib) in the other parts of it. I just lucked out because that one little patch had libs poking out all over the place. I will try to get a photo of the area the next time I am out there.

iam sure you would be able to find more there but its very hard to search them in high grass  but you will get an eye for that too ^^

Great haul! Was this picked prior to the freeze, or after?

Cause we had a few nights below zero and a little snow as
well here in Norway, but the next weeks are going to be more
like 10 degrees and a lot of rain. Not very optimistic, but it
would surely be nice to see some more fruits out and about.

Haha  iam glat that you like the pics LK, i think after your storm over there you should be able to find also massive hauls :awesomenod:

And those at the beginning, including the big cluster, where picked before freeze and the last haul at the end was collected in the snow at -0.5°C  so i a little drop below zero just pushes them in my opinion. i think you should give your fields a look, you also saw how long the season here was last year, and it was snowing and freezing a bit too

Apparently my area hit -6 degrees Celsius one night and -7 degrees Celsius the next. I'm struggling to find anything now :frown: I don't know if the season is dead for me now but I'm not optimistic. Are any of the other German dwellers having any success now?

you know fux, I was doing some research and figured out some of the old hunting grounds for German Kahuna down in Weisbaden near Franfurt airport, there's some pretty obvious locations marking where he used to go..like a cemetery where a famous composer is buried..and I have the name of the cemetery.. You think if we went down there , we might find some lucky cultivated spots? not to ever raid one of his..that's not what I meant, but he might have left some clues to some very productive hunting spots for woodlovers..yes?
