I have a question...
    #1646277 - 06/19/03 11:23 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Sometimes when I'm hunting I come across these little cones on the patties that are the same size as pins.
The cones look like maybe a pin died and the head was hollowed out.

What are those?

Hmm... There is a cup fungus that grows on dung and might be what you're talking about. It's called Cyathus stercoreus, or the "Splash-cup Bird's Nest" (in my book at least).

It looks kinda similar to these, which are Cyathus striatus. Take a look and let me know if that's what you're talking about.

Maybe some Coprinus species which self-digested itself?

What color are they?

They are usually brownish colored and seem to be always dried up. I figured most people see them because they are common on my hunts. I always thought they were dead pins though.

Oh yeah, good call Steve. That looks like what I'm talking about in the picture.

To tell you the truth I can't remember ever finding both on the same pie. Maybe someone else can answer this.

But I think it would be rare to find two different fungii on the same pattie.

yea thats what i thought but im kinda trying to find out what the progression of species is. like do the cones come first and then the cubes and copes or is it the other way around stuff like that so that when i see them i know to either check back or just leave it be.
