lots of spores
    #1645728 - 06/19/03 07:41 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

has anyone ever tried gathering spores from say 20-40 caps and sealed them nicely for starage. You say why have so many spores what would the applications be. You can for instance throw P.Can. under every woodchip bed that you see. It would be much easier than carrying a jar of spawn with you and safer. Or you can P.C. on cows and horses.
It would be just cool to have a testtube full of spores.

Foaf is gunna take something carboard like beer coaster. Put foil or paper on coaster. Take a thick needle better yet 2 thick needles or 3 and punch it throug from the bottom. You can then suspend the cap on the needles and print regular. Once that cap is done put another and repaet many many times. You prob can get a shitload of spores that way and i dont care if its not sterile that way i can always isolate myc through petri.

That is a good idea. You could get a dickooad of spores. I'm just a newb, but wouldn't the different genotypes of the mushrooms compete with each other once they germinated? Possibly killing eachother and ultimately stunting their growth?

What is "P.Can."?

Sense your not worried about how clean the prints are you could print on a sheet of glass and then use a razor blade and scrape the spores in to your conainer.

But an unsterile beer cap with 20 layers of spores?

he was talking about a coaster - the thing you set your beer on to keep it from discoloring wood.

then wrapping foil around it, then printing over and over. I think he doesn't know you could just use glass.

He wasn't talking about a beer cap though. I think it would be much easier to just take a quart jar and print caps over and over inside of it. until you have a nice thick layer, then scrape, add water, and voila a jar full of spore juice.

Hi,

why using spores for guerilla-farming? It's much easier and promising to take some petri dishes with well grown mycelium, mix them (without the glass ;-) in a watering can and go for a walk round the neighborhood...

here's something that will help you with doing so, is the liquid tek or also known as honey tek and they would spread alot faster when u use them because it is live mycelium so they don't need to germinate or fusion of compatable hyphae. All you need is honey, jar, water, spores, and a pc,The correct mixture for optimum results is 4% sugars {honey, malt} by weight and 96% water.
Water weighs 1 gram per cc/ml so if you use 100 ml as total weight, then 96 grams/ml/cc of water is mixed with 4 grams of honey, etc.
For those who figure that close is good enough, roughly 1 tablespoon of honey per pint will work.
The basic idea then is to get a jar with a good lid, canning jars like commonly used in pf tek work great.
The lid can be drilled and the hole covered with a filter disk or stuffed with polyfil to allow spores to be injected after the mix has been sterilized.
alternatively, one can use a glovebox and simply crack the lid a little to inoculate.
After the lid has been prepared, add the water and honey and stir until the honey disolves. It's easier if warm water is used.
Then tighten the lid and pressure cook or steam for 30-40 minutes. Don't overdo it because too much heat too long will ruin the mix by carmelizing the sugars.
After it cools to room temperature it is ready to be inoculated. Inject 1 or 2 cc's of spore solution into each jar.
Alternatively, instead of spores, mycellial tissue from any part of any living shroom can be substituted.
Keep the inoculated jar warm in a clean environment.
Within several days, strands of mycellial tissue will appears and begin to grow.
Allow it to grow at least several days then it is ready to use. You can draw up syringfuls thru the polyfil/filter or open it inside a glovebox, etc.
Try to get as much tissues as possible in the syringes, a nice thick mix will grow out very fast when used to inoculate jars, etc.
Store excess in clean refridgerator or discard within a few more days as the mix is best used fresh.
In the 'fridge, it can last until the sugar runs out, about a month or so, usually.
Also, if you want to grow out a lot, the mix can be drained and strained and the mycellia consumed for a little treat.

you only use a lil bit of spore and you can inoculate tons of jars each jar can do tons of syringes or like what you said spray them all over the mycelium is living so it will cut the time down alot

I was under the impression that spores had to dry out before making syringes. So when Raadt said just print and scrape and add water and make a syringe. This'll work? They don't need to dry out to be scraped or anything? This could be a dumb question but I've never attempted to do this before. So maybe someone can fill me in.

oh hehe. Well, i'd imagine the best way to go about that is as was said earlier. A pane of glass, which you could then scrape - you could print 30-40 caps on a large sheet.
