Calvin and Hobbes, Farside, and the sad book store kitteh.
    #16442914 - 06/26/12 09:21 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I just picked up a collection of both Calvin and Hobbes and Farside at the local used book store. I'm new to Calvin and Hobbes but I remember reading Farside all the time growing up. I don't understand how Gary Larson can make one image and caption into something so funny and memorable. I remember seeing one of his which consisted of nothing but a penguin lying on its side and looking at a banana peel on the ground. A banana peel and a penguin... who would've thought?

:ilold::somagnificent:

Calvin and Hobbes is good too although I only started reading that one. These collections might be my constant companions for a while. They seem to make me smile when little else can.

I also saw a sad fat kitteh staring at books:

:frown:

I petted him. Honestly I think he's not a sad kitteh but he seems so in this instance. He's fat so I assume he eats well and the bookstore is a pretty chill place to lie around.

I'd venture a guess that his sadness resides deep in his heart due to his lack of thumbs.

He looks like he wants to read those sooooo bad.

I actually just spent the last hour looking for giant prints of Calvin and Hobbes to hang in my room. I am thinking of this one, although I wish it was a little bigger.

Edit: I am also looking for this, but it is apparently rare.

I have the "Essential" and "Authoritative" Calvin and Hobbes in my bathroom for random reading. The only thing I enjor more on the shitter than that and the "Far Side" is the "Uncle John's Bathroom Reader". Those three are a must.

Sadly in all my years I have lost every single Far Side book I ever had. I need to get on the ball and start collecting those. Gary Larson was a master mind of brilliant one panel comedy.
Damn, looking back I had every one up to "Wiener Dog Art", all gone into the ether. But It looks like there is 5 books worth I have not ever seen, that is a huge bonus.

There was some animated stuff done from him, Tales from the Far Side (1994) I know I saw it in the past many years ago, can't really recall it now. Probably not he best in that medium but something to look for if you are a die hard fan.

Calvin and Hobbes is probably my favorite comic strip ever. Even though it ended almost 17 years ago, I'm still shocked when I hear that people haven't read it, or are just discovering it for the first time. Educate yourself fools! And seriously buy some of the books or check them out from the library, there's some great art in there and it's so much better than reading online.

This painting — by “Calvin and Hobbes” creator Bill Watterson — is the first new art from him that his syndicate has seen in the 16 subsequent years, say executives with Universal Uclick and its parent company, Andrews McMeel. The artwork is of the character Petey Otterloop from Richard Thompson’s comic strip “Cul de Sac.”
