Fuel pellets in the North Carolina area are $4.50 - $5.00 per 40# bag.

Generally, at the prices the fuel pellet company sells their product, they can not afford to use any chemicals or insecticides.  Fuel pellet companies generally follow logging operations acquiring their hardwood scrap free and producing a sellable product.  Some logging companies also make fuel pellets as a side business.

thank you for the insight.

i assume i can get alfafa pellets at a feed store and wheat bran at sprouts.

also for wood lovers do you want an airy substrate or solid. cause i assume thos pellets and bran just pack super tight

senorcafe, Lately, I've been using fuel pellets for oysters; I've found they work way better than straw.  (You do know that you should hydrate the pellets - they double in size and turn to sawdust.)

Sage Seeker, that's a helluva an autoclave.  Wow.

they dont pack that hard. i think the trick is to keep the block in a managable size. 6lbs or so. i woudnt do a monotub filled with sawdust like some can do with straw.
