Enter, you may have made some people hesitate to answer by specifying "the newer crowd", because that could mean anything from the last week to the last year!

As to your question, the elements of the gospels that I like the most (and yes I have read them all, but I don't remember every detail) is where Jesus preaches about love and compassion. Next best is where he argues with the Pharisees when they try to trap him with their ridiculous rules, and Jesus always counters with a smart (and often humorous) reply. Sometimes his own disciples played the role of the Pharisees, like in one of my favorite stories, the one about the woman of Canaan who wanted him to help her daughter, but the disciples wanted to send her away. There is a lot of double-entendre in that story...

And my favourite quote from the gospels is "the kingdom of God is within you".

The parts I like the least are the beginnings of Matthew and Luke where they go on about the bloodline of Jesus and what he was supposed to have done as a kid. Even if true, what relevance does it have to his teachings? I also don't like the episode where Jesus kills a fig tree in anger just because it didn't have any fruit at the moment when he was hungry. That's not very inspiring.

And then there are the parts that describe the crucifixion and what is claimed to have happened afterwards. This is very interesting from a historical perspective, but I don't see much spiritual relevance in it, except of course for the fact that Jesus didn't back down and kiss Pilate's ass when he was questioned by him, even after being tortured and knowing what was going to happen. That kind of firmness has always impressed me, whenever and wherever it is displayed.

Jesus is many characters in the bible. Though im not really sure who's who sometimes. I just use my intuition.

It is possible to be so Holy and so profound that your presence offends people and makes them feel threatened, eventually coming to feel disarmed in your presence. Gradually, those around you become more and more irritated until finally you get piked up on a stick and crucified.

Just a thought, maybe it's relevant, maybe not.

He was a long-haired, sandal-wearing, peace-loving hippie - that's the difficulty!

The Republican moral-majority Christian right-wingers would really hate him if he were alive today becauwe he would not support the killing of any of his children - American or Iraqi.

not only will they really hate him. they will crucify him - again.

in fact. we / they crucify Jesus every day.

Jesus said that he can appear as a begger or a prostitute. to love Jesus is to love your fellow man.
