Demiurge said: The malabar pics on the sporebank website ARE malabars. Malabars have a tendency to grow to full maturity without their veils breaking. What you are seeing in those pics are mushrooms at full maturity when their caps are starting to upturn, but their veil is still attached. That is what makes them so unnusual looking. Unfortunately, veils staying attached that long is uncommon, and it is unlikely that yours will do the same. However, malabars are the only cubies that I know of that will do that at all. So if you want shrooms that look like those pics, then you will have to keep growing malabars.
I thought pf were known for keeping their viels longer than normal as well? could be wrong I've never worked with them myself

Firstly - Anno - im not talking from my perspective - im suggesting that the majority of the money made by vendors is from newbies - so Im hoping to enlighten newbies on this issue. No where did i say that diversity was the issue - diversity is ofcourse a fantastic thing. I actually meant in the case of the Ko Samu cubensis quite the opposite - there isnt much diversity on one small geographically isolated island. Secondly - yes i am criticising MJshroomer - i do that on a daily basis, because he once told me that he was an authority on Australian Psilocybes and that he was a 'Mushroom God.' Id say that about nearly everything he has posted regarding Australian psilocybes is factually incorrect and demonstrates that he has little understanding of biology in general, let alone the Subaeruginosa complex within Australia. Thirdly, I wasnt saying that MJ himself was profiting from the sales of these different 'diverse' strains from the same small island - he already has from the sale of the original spores to various vendors upon hs return - i am talking about the vendors who are now marketing them. If you'd rather listen to the vendors and pay them your hard-earned $$ or someone makes posts claiming he is a mushroom god despite making constant factually incorrect posts - that's your choice. But I think that newbies would do well to stick to reputable spore-races and would probably get more genetic diversity from their own cubes picked from local paddocks, than from some of the mutated crap available through vendors.

not to inject myself into this debate but malabars are not the only cubie that will produce such shrooms. here's a pic of one [SA strain] i grew, before the veil tore it looked exactly like sporework's famous photo.

No strain is purely stable - depending on the genetics of the spore match, you might get all sorts of oddities, but a picture of the domestication of a species would be a high level of viability from innoculations. BTW that veil is pretty amazing!

seven year old thread but it still beats a dead horse a cube is a cube is a cube. Ive grown atleast 7 varieties and yep they were all cubes. I noticed PES Hawwaiin Gave me the most prolific fast paced trip. Amazons gave me the best social trip. But I never grew a cube that didnt give me a cube trip.
