No, if the cap has opened in the wild then anything could be caught in the gills.

Paid and I have been working on Liberty Caps from a wild print, however the mushrooms we grew were Ink Caps.  :frown:

The easirest way to do this, IME, is to get a good spore print and streak a *visible* amount of spores onto water agar. The spores should then germinate, and you can section off a piece of the outer part where they grew out (as opposed to the place where you had originally streaked the spores) and sterilly transfer it to nutritious media.

Water agar is just 20g non-nutrified (pure) agar per L of water. Prepare and sterilize it as you would any other type of agar.

Another easy thing to do is to tissue culture the fruitbody in a sterile environment from the inside after rubbing the whole outside with 70% alcohol (and letting it evaporate for a few seconds.) Under a laminar flow hood it's very easy to do with two scalples and a sterile petrie dish -- rub it with alcohol holding it with some kind of sterilized "pokey-tool," cut it longitudinally on the top of the petrie and just cut off a slice from the inside with both scalples + put it onto the bottom of the sterile petrie, and then transfer it to nutrified media (i.e. malt extract or PDA.)

Dude, you need to use agar. Unless you're experienced (or willing to fuck around with sterile agar and shit for weeks), forget it.

I've tried using many different methods of getting sterile prints from wild mushrooms and have never had success, no matter how good the plan seemed.

But if you get even non-sterile prints of wild mushrooms, people will swap them for sterile prints in the marketplace forum, especially if you come from somewhere interesting. Some people get a kick out of screwing around with new strains.

Not to derail the thread but.. I thought liberty caps were almost impossible to cultivate. Like they needed to grow along with grasses or something to fruit.

Not impossible, but almost  I believe workman has had limited success, and we were trying different things.

I streaked some agar with the spores, but obviously there were a few rogue coprinus spores in there. The coprinus was the more vigorous mycelium and soon filled the plate. We didn't know this until Paid got some pins.

Obviously unless we had some tremendous luck, they weren't gonna be Libs. The project has been scrapped until Lib Cap season starts again (couple months)

"in times of widespread chaos and confusion, it has been the duty of more advanced human beings - artists, scientists, clowns, and philosophers - to create order. In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. To relieve the repression of the human spirit, they must sow doubt and disruption"

"People do it every day, they talk to themselves ... they see themselves as they'd like to be, they don't have the courage you have, to just run with it."

I don't know if its been done before, but if I had to I'd try using some fine cloth. This is an adaptation to isolating pollen experiment I once done:

Take some fine cloth, muslin might be good.

When the veil of the mushroom is about to pop , surround the entire cap with the cloth; leave it quite loose. Loosely fix to the stipe - fine thread helps here.

You may need to closely observe the mushroom to time it right.

Hopefully then the veil will break whilst contained within the cloth. Cut the cap away from the stipe (ensuring that the main part of the cap is contained within the cloth).

Transfer to a sterile environment.

Position cap to be printed, allow spores to fall for 1-2 hours. Discard print. Anything caught on the gill surface will hopefully be gone by now.

Move cap to final printing position - take required print.

Using this method will minimize the chances of a contam, but there is always a risk concerning wild prints.
