Popcorn Tek: grow as cakes or spawn?
    #1642776 - 06/18/03 06:17 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I tried the popcorn tek. the jars are colonizing well,
maybe 1 week more, and they are fully covered.

Then i read about this tek i assumed, that the fully colonized cakes
will be handeld like cakes from vermiculite/rye.
(put them in a box with humidity of maybe 80% with some light)

Now i read, that this might not be a good way, and that they
better grow in some kind of straw bed?
(I read faqs and posts on shroomery, but i am not much wiser
then before .. )

Does anybody have some experience with popcorn?

Do they also grow as cake, or do i HAVE to brake them apart.
(And if so, whats the best way of doing it? Will only straw
be good enough, and do the straw/popcorn mixture needs the same
humidity ?

you could just case the popcorn as is...or spawn it too straw...its up to you...but prolly not a good idea to just put it in a humidity chamber like a cake

if you want the cautious and incidently also the lazy way,
simply case the popcorn 'as is' right in the jar.
remove the lid piece and replace it with a double layer of tyvek or coffee filters, held on by the rim band or rubber bands. remove only when the fruit reach it [even that's optional, they'll bend to conform if you leave it on]
cover the popcorn in place with about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of your favorite casing, possibly even damp vermiculite.
then sit it somewhere where it will be warm and get light. open once a day and lightly mist the verm. tilt the jar to pour off any excess left over from previous mistings.
it's just that simple.
after flushing, scrape off old casing, dunk in fridge 24 hours, drain well, re-case with fresh material and repeat cycle until it gives out.

hippie3 - how do you harvest those without either breaking the jar or damaging the cake?

Thanks for the responses

@stupaod:

>but prolly not a good idea to just put it in a humidity chamber like a cake
Why? what could happen if this is done ?
(brake apart, contamination, dont grow at all? )
If i spawn it to straw, do i just have to mix the cake with pastereuzid straw,
and thats it, or is there more to it ?

@Hippie3:
>simply case the popcorn 'as is' right in the jar.
Dont i lose some shroomes that way?
(then shroomes can only grow from the top, but not from the sides of the cake)

>dunk in fridge 24 hours
Do you mean by this , that i should cover the cakes for 24 hours in water?
(Wont that harm the mycelium?)

>cover the popcorn in place with about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of your favorite casing
Why is this nessesary? contamination shoudnt be a prob, and if the humidity is about 80-90%
in the fruting chamber, the humidity should be ok too.
(Or is this tek for use without a high humidity fruting chamber?)
And will the shroomes grow through this vermiculite layer without problems ?

>re-case with fresh material
Do you mean a clean jar and a fresh vermiculite topping by this?

@Raadt:
>was it really necessary to start another thread? there's 2 others going on right now reg. popcorn ;\
Imho yes.
Because the threads about popcorn are only about how to create cakes..but not about
what to do with the cakes after that.

you don't really 'lose' shroomies, it not's like they fruit from every square inch anyway. think of a casing, most of the substrate is buried, never fruits itself. but this thing is a colony type organism, it moves nutes and water place to place and will fruit where it can, where the conditions are right. so the potential yield remains constant, the only limiting factor being the lifespan of the culture. that's what i meant by safe, this tek is fairly low risk as the colony is left intact in the jar and rarely even exposed to unfiltered room air. a casing that contams after one or two flushes will give less than a jar that goes 4 or 5.
but i'm not saying this is the "best" way, just saying it's an option.

as for dunking, yes it means submerging the colony, but no, if you follow the directions dunking is not only harmless but highly effective.
for more info on dunking,
see http://www.mycotopia.net/teks/dunktek.html

a casing is needed for a couple good reason.
one is that plain grain just doesn't fruit all that well by itself,
the casing layer helps trigger fruiting by holding in co2 and moisture. also being nutrient-free signals the mycellia that it's run out of food so it's time to reproduce.
they'll grow thru the casing [verm.] with no problem, just don't make it too deep, 1/4 to 1/2 inch tops.

you don't need a clean jar, leave it in the original jar, just scrape off the old casing and apply fresh between each flush, after dunking.

lol
very carefully.
tweezers, a knife, and fingers do the trick.
the shrooms don't always come out intact,
but that matters little once dried.

Actually, ya don't even have to be careful picking those mushies. Dig em out with a fork, then scrape all the casing off, and rinse the shit outta the jar. The 'cake' will float and twirl under the faucet. After all the 'crap' rinses down the drain, fill the jar up with tap water and dunk for 24 hours. Then recase. Hip is right, who gives a rats ass if the mushies are broken? A broken up dried mushie looks just like a perfectly preserved dried mushie. They all look like shit once dry.

closing this thread, it's not advanced. You can ask about how to spawn, case, or grow from cakes in mush cult if you like.
