"For example, according to Robert Rector, an economist with the Heritage Foundation who uses the government's numbers, the typical person in the poorest fifth of U.S. households today spends as much as the person of average wealth in the early 1970s (adjusted for inflation).
The typical "poor" American, according to census data, has a car, air conditioning, a refrigerator, a stove, a VCR and a color TV. It should go without saying -but usually doesn't -that in, say, 1960, someone who had a color TV, a refrigerator, air conditioning and a car would not be considered poor. "
"Poor" people.

There's more to being poor than just having material possessions.
-------------------- The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame". In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience. And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him. "Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

The second one. How many millions of Americans don't have proper healthcare, education, housing? I just don't consider whether or not someone has a TV to be a good indicator of whether they are 'poor' or not.
I agree with the guy though that the standard of living in this day and age, is higher, for more people, than at any other time in history (and I try to remind myself of that often). I just don't think the rich should get richer off other people's suffering, I think we live in an age where it's possible for the standard of living to be even higher, for everyone.

I actually agree with this guy that being poor is relative. There will ALWAYS be poor people no matter what, because even if you're a millionaire, you're poor if everyone else is a billionaire. Sure, you're doing OK, but you're still poor because of your relative postion in society.
But Johah (the author of the article) completely misses the point. Johah says as long as you're doing OK, then you shouldn't bitch about being "poor". But what he ignores is what is causing the gap between rich and poor. If it's that some people work harder than others, then fine. But what if the "poor" are paying 40% income tax and the rich are paying 10%? Then that's unfair, and the "poor" have a valid right to complain.

Then it's a good thing that doesn't actually happen.

Most of those poor still can't afford $300 a month for health insurance.

Actually the point as I see it is that the poor, for the most part, aren't actually poor, just not as well to do.
Or to put it more simply, most of them have nothing to bitch about.

Then why do some people still have to choose between food and medicine.

Some choose not to accept help, some don't realize it's there.
Some would probably do just fine on what they have if they didn't buy cigs, booze, and drugs.
Some are just fools.

Exactly. And the gap is going to get wider if Bush continues to give the rich additional unfair tax breaks, like cutting the capital gains tax.

I'd think the pity would go to some poor schmuck who's still posting about boredom a day later.
Laugh clown, laugh.

No, and no.
Actually, it's only crazy to those who think most people are pathetic losers who are unable to care for themselves.

The thing is you really don't sound like you're laughing luv. The more you post the more you make it obvious that your life really is so boring that posting insults about a complete stranger is the only fun you have.
