 why do awesome rappers make "beat" albums?

The subject pretty much sums it up. If a rap group is fucking sick, why not put lyrics to awesome beats instead of just putting out a "beats" album. I just saw the doppelgangaz are coming out with a new cd but it's a beats album and this is what raised the question. Their beats are fucking sick for sure, but so are their lyrics. Are they trying to sell their beats to other rappers or something?

Probably just feel like flexing their production some, or are releasing a bunch of beats that they never did anything with lyrically but thought were too good to let sit around unheard.

Throwing a bunch of unheard beats onto an album is a good way to give your fans new material between LPs, and make some more money.

not like it's something that happens often really
what's worse is dope producer turning into average mc's (pete rock, alchemist, madlib)  shut the fuck and make beats gotdamit.
or these great rappers who have skillz but will rap over any beats (kool keith, krs-one, sean price)

Dr Dre is notorious for doing this Op. It gives freestyle rappers a beat to flow over. Kinda a street thing.

the chronic was lyrics over beats on one side of the tape and just instrumentals on the other side.
The chronic 2001 came as just instrumentals.
He also has been planning an album for like ever about the solar system.
And that is just the albums he rapped on. He is a producer remember; so how many albums that he produced came with an instrumental????

that's not the same thing at all.
I never heard that about the chronic, might be a bootleg. also releasing an instrumental album of a real one is not uncommon when the beats are surreal sick. other than that I'm sure most instru. of Dre you heard came from b-side single wich is also very common just like accapela.
beside snoop and D.O.C. and N.W.A. I can't name any artist that have an album exclusively produced by dre.

if I'm not mistaken that's the only track on there NOT produce by dre, but by daz.
and now that I think about it doggystyle is just perfect as is, top5 best rap album ever made EASILY, and performers are part of its epicness.

actually it's #1 of all time IMO. the (G)funkness of it is yet to be matched. the unique flow and special voice of snoop at that time was never duplicated. the perfect and somewhow "elaborate" structure of the songs with the right amount of featurings and singings and one-liners from dre really makes it an album that was the view of a mastermind.
someone could argue about the contents of the lyrics but fuck that' that's entertainement at it's finest

Doppelgangaz, Akala, Lowkey, Logic are my favorites. I just recently got into the UK rap and it's pretty awesome.

Snoop and Dre are sick. Not really much of an Eminem fan as he puts me in a bad headspace. I feel the artists I listed are more relevant to me so that's why I listen to them. I like artists that talk about intelligent topics while having sick flow and beats.

sometimes if you listen closely, you can almost hear the lyrics in a good beat. just because there are no lyrics does not mean there is no meaning.

But I definitely prefer something with a lil more humor and wit to it.

not to sound like a derp, but i like " real " hip hop. and i know people reading this are going to and lol at that. but i like hip hop that tells stories and speaks about real shit. lyrics with substance, something you can listen to and follow and identify with, kind of like the rapper is speaking to you. not just " yo i got cars clothes hoes, i put coke up my nose " type of bullshit rap. i hate the type of hip hop where they say a whole lot of words but really say nothing.

I once delivered pizza to a black church and I saw some of the kids jammin' out to some beats from The Chronic with no lyrics. Probably the only way their christian parents will let them hear it.

If you're talking about an all instrumental album, there are plenty of reasons, many of them listed in this thread already.
Another is for dj's. Sometimes you really love the tune, but despise the vocals- a great example is "Ayo Technology". Real nice Timbaland beat, ruined by 50 cent and Justin Timberlake. As a dj, I can mix this in with other tunes nicely, let it run for 60 seconds, then mix out. Or play the instrumental and match an a capella over it.
