Computer speakers: low to no voice, but can hear instruments

Okay, first I'd like to say I dropped 3 tabs 20 minutes ago, now to the actual post.
On my built in speakers on my Toshiba Satellite laptop I cannot hear vocals or people talking unless I turn them all the way up and it is still so low I can barely make out what they are saying. If I play music I can hear instruments, but cannot hear the vocals. It is extremely wierd. I first noticed it when I was listening to touch of grey and realized I couldn't hear anyone singing... Does anyone know what might be going on? My grandfather was messing around with a microphone on my computer and he was in sound setting clicking random shit, that may have something to do with it because it also sounds the same through headphones. It must be a sound card problem? I want to be able to listen to music without having to use my iphone throughout tonight's trip.

The couple of times that I have seen this, it has been an impedance problem on the output... usually corrosion on the output contacts, creating a low pass filter, thus you hear the lower frequencies, but the upper frequencies get filtered out. However, if you have the same problem with internal speakers and headphones, then the problem is likely something else.

It may be a setting somewhere for multi-channel audio, like 5.1 audio. I have come across this a few times, and it has always been caused by the soundcard attempting to output 5.1 channel sound on a 2 speaker system. It's something to do with the way the soundcard downmixes the audio. It may be occuring because the soundcard is trying to upmix a 2-channel sound to a 5.1-channel sound, but in the end it only can play from 2 speakers. They may be set as the rear speakers.
Check your speaker configuration, and make sure it's set at 2 speakers.

Do you know where exactly this setting would be? I went to Control panel/Sounds/Configure and then checked a box that said full range speakers. It didn't do anything, I'm not sure if that's what you meant.
Edit: I called Toshiba support and since my computer is out of warranty, they wanted to charge me $50 for help, fuck that. Help!

right click your speaker icon on the bottom right corner, go to playback devices, then right click on what you use for speakers and click on configure speakers.

I think you need some good old fashioned speaker cleaner... I can't believe their are apps to clean the speakers on smart phones.

It's not because they are dirty, the headphone jack does the same thing. I already tried configuring them, didn't work.

i'd check the line balances then. it could be in surround with the back speakers being set way higher than the front giving you loud ambiance sounds but not main tracks.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling your sound drivers.

It's not this if it sound like this through the headphones. Where do I find my sound driver on my computer to uninstall. I'm on vista.

it would be the same on speakers as it would be on headphones, it's all the same output.

Go to Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Device Manager
Device Manager has a listing of every piece of hardware in your system. The section you want is "Sound, video, and game controllers", click the + beside it. It should list your sound devices...there may be more than one, though. For example, mine lists like:
Sound, video, and game controllers ->ATI HDMI Audio ->Realtek High Definition Audio
The one I would want is the Realtek one...I know this because ATI makes my video card, HDMI is an audio/video interface, and just because I know that Realtek made my sound chip
So Right-Click on whichever one you decide is yours, and choose "Uninstall". When it finishes uninstalling, you should restart your computer. Upon restarting, Windows should find that it has "new" hardware and will install the device drivers for you. You may have to restart one more time.
If none of this works, check your PC manufacturers web site for an updated sound driver for your system. Try installing that (there is really no need to unistall the drivers you have first...Windows will detect if the driver you are installing is an updated driver and replace as needed).

The problem solved for me, when I moved the pin of the cable connecting the sound-card to the external amplifier (TEAC), on the rare side. It had not, maybe, been seated well in its socket. My headphones are connected to the external amplifier too. Now there's no sound problem. I hope, helped a litle. Thanks, bye.

I had this happen once randomly and it was AWESOME. I wish I could duplicate it. There were some albums that were amazing as instrumentals, to the point where I tried to get the artists to put out instrumental versions. The problem fixed itself on its own and has never reappeared. I think it was a connectivity issue w/ the speakers.
