Marc Emery stands up to pot-snatching cops

Marc Emery, publisher of Cannabis Culture Magazine, invites Ontario residents to join him in protest on the sidewalk in front of the Toronto Police Department at 40 College Street West, where he will defiantly smoke joints next Thursday, June 19 at 4:20 pm.
"We want the people of Ontario to know that they can smoke pot anywhere, even in front of police should they want to," said Emery.
He points to inconsistencies between the decisions of the courts (CC online, Marijuana legal in Ontario) and the actions of cops still high on enforcement. On May 16, the Ontario Supreme Court ruled that the province's laws against pot possession were invalid, and on June 2 an Ontario provincial court dismissed 90 cases of marijuana possession charges in the space of 22 minutes.
"Now, Toronto police say that they won't charge anyone for pot, but they will still take it away from you," said Emery. "How can they take it away if there are no laws against possessing it? I'm certainly not going to give them my pot. They'll have to take it by force, but they can't do that without arresting or charging someone, and there is no law to arrest or charge anyone with."

Marcs a real canadian hero...who threatens to turn in customers of his whom he doesn't like.
His seeds have been rumored to be knockoffs, and fakes...
They'll take away his pot through force, throw him in jail for awhile, and confuse the facts of the inccident so that nothing happens to the cops, or emery.

I hope he gets an awesome turnout tomorrow (Thursday). That would really send out a strong signal against recriminalization. I also hope people stay mellow, but if they smoke enough, that shouldn't be an issue.

what a dumbass! He is going to get it recriminilized. This is deffinitly not the way to go about it. I'm sure he has a behind the scenes financial agenda. If it becomes legal prices will drop. The more illegal the higher the prices.

Thats BS man. Marc has done so much great stuff for pot legalization and rights and such, take some time to learn instead of judging him like that. It is going to be recriminalized as soon as they can anyways, so if anyhting it's a good thing.

I dont agree with what he's doing. Its a bad idea to piss off the law. He should deal with cops taking his, and other peoples pot legally. The cops are now *stealing* from him. He could just sue them or press charges, complaints, w/e you do in canada

I don't believe he has any strains of his own. Most of his stuff is f2 knockoffs of other people's work.
There are a few people on overgrow that have worked for him. They insist that he is a shady businessman who has threatened to Narc people out when they hassled him after he screwed them on business deals. THey also claim that whenever he is out of some strains he will send random bagseed in it's place, and it's generally understood that the charges as much as or more for his F2 knockoffs than what you can get F1s for from the breeder, and their distributors.

I agree. I don't think it will hurt pot at all, but simply force people to discuss it more. Looks like the turnout wasn't that big, if this article is correct.

Toronto police ignore pot party in front of HQ
Dozens of green-wearing, pot-smoking revellers partied outside Toronto's downtown police headquarters today, smoking their joints, bongs and pipes without being harassed by a single police officer.
Streams of sweet smoke wafted through the air as cannabis crusader Marc Emery, a Vancouver resident, handed out joints to fellow pot enthusiasts and urged them to exercise "the lawful right to possess marijuana."
"Marijuana is legal in Ontario to possess and it is permissible under law to smoke marijuana anywhere it is permissible to smoke tobacco in Ontario," Emery said, calling the province the freest jurisdiction in the western world, with recent court challenges of pot laws and the acceptance of gay marriages.
Although the event was right on police property, no uniformed officers were seen among the crowd. Inside headquarters, police seemed disinterested with the party and no officers were made available to comment.
"I trust if the police wanted to apprehend our pot they could've done so," Emery said of the not-so-subtle challenge to police.
"I thought the most provocative place to smoke marijuana with others would be right in front of (police Chief Julian Fantino's) doorstep."
Police organizations in Ontario have said they will not lay charges for possession of marijuana under 30 grams until the country's muddled pot laws are clarified.
The Ontario Court of Appeal ruled on June 10 that it would not overturn a precedent-setting Ontario Superior Court decision that cleared a teenager of marijuana possession charges.
The Superior Court judge ruled there is no current ban on pot possession in Ontario since the federal government failed to comply with a July 2000 court order to create a new law dealing with the drug.
The Liberal government hopes to have its new marijuana legislation passed by the end of the year. Under the proposed new laws, possession of up to 15 grams of pot - enough to roll about 15 to 20 joints - would be a minor offence that carries no criminal record.
In the meantime, Emery said the province, and more specifically Toronto, might get an infusion of tourism from travellers wanting to smoke up without fear of a criminal record.
"(Toronto) is the coolest place in the world to be right now, the most enlightened and the most advanced place to be," Emery said. "With SARS and all the related difficulties we've had in Ontario, this is the ideal (solution) to bring hundreds of thousands of tourists here, for the fine Canadian marijuana that circulates throughout Ontario.
"Tell everybody around the world to come to Ontario; celebrate a unique freedom available only here in Ontario."
Emery is recognized in the marijuana community as a leading activist in trying to get the drug legalized. He also runs the B.C. Marijuana Party, Cannabis Culture magazine, a store that sells marijuana seeds, and once ran for mayor of Vancouver.
Alison Myrden, a government-licensed medicinal marijuana user, said she attended the rally not to party, but to thank Emery for his work that helped her get a legal exemption to smoke and treat her multiple sclerosis.
"For me it's not a choice - it's a matter of quality of life because if I don't have marijuana then I can't get out of bed," she said. "I can't stop throwing up and I can't get out of a wheelchair."
