Bicarb desiccant? * 1
    #16418107 - 06/22/12 12:03 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I've put a bowl of almost dry mushrooms sitting in an air-tight container with a bunch of bicarbonate soda. Do you think this will work as a desiccant? If so, will it take much longer than using silica gel or other desiccants?

Cheeeers.

Sodium bicarbonate is not the best desiccant, though it may work a bit if dried properly first. Go get some cheap as chips magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) or some damp rid (calcium chloride) at walmart, then ensure it is fully dehydrated with an oven at 150-200°F before using. And remember, desiccants are only the last step, and can't dehydrate a fresh mushroom. Fan dry first, as always, or get a dehydrator.

Even lye (sodium hydroxide) is a great desiccant if dehydrated, though a tad bit more hazardous than most.

Here is a good list, though not all are compatible.

Yeah I read that list and didn't see bicarb listed, that's why i was asking.. I've heard of it being used as a desiccant before though. We don't have a Walmart here in Australia and the main supermarket chains don't seem to stock damprid. I think I may have some epsom salts laying around though.

So dehydration is necessary? Even if it's a freshly opened pack? I thought it'd be dry when it was bought.

I've already fan dried them to almost crisp, then I blended them a bit in a coffee grinder and now they are sitting with the bicarb. But maybe I should remove the bicarb and bake it first?

we say bake the dessiccant first just as a precautionary measure to make sure that its at its dryest(most absorbent).
