Ha,
I always wondered if I would ever venture to grow... and well, this b-day came along and flop.. in my lap from my awesome Grandmother comes this pre knocked/ ready to birth Shiitake Bag/Cake/Block. It sat around for a while staring at me when I walked by it every day and so.. I figured.. what the heck..
It looked like little popcorn balls all over the side of it.. I stripped the bag, dunked for six hours, then put upside down on a rack as seen in pics.
What do you think? is she going to birth? Looks like it doesn't take a rocket scientist to birth these but I'm as green as it gets.
At this point I'm three days in and misting twice a day with the humidity tent on. Fluffy Fuzzy look coming on over the surface.
What to expect? I dont know..

Seems like it still has to brown properly; with a complete browning you'll have better flushes; the problem is that if this phase is done outside of the bag, the block will be more prone to contaminations by green mold. My advice is to reduce misting, waiting for full browning, then performing a cold-shock and slapping a little that block. In this way you should have good results.

you will need to wait at least 14 days from taking the plastic off, it would be better if the log was browner but just leave it sitting quitely and it will brown. If you get green mould starting because of the lack of brown layer wash it off with a 10% bleach solution.

Ok, thanks for the pointers guys. BTW, it looks like as I examine it closely that there was a "brown" shell all over it before it came out of the bag.
The Popcorn looking things are little puffy clumps that have actually broken the brown crust and are expanding.
Considering I have already dunked, and have already been watering, and it looks like its already had a brown crust, but breaking free, shouldnt it be fine??? And shouldnt I just keep doing what I'm doing???
Thanks

It looks like block started popcorning after you ripped off the bag. You'll have to wait until it stops and a new brown crust form

it started popcorning before I poped the bag. And before I dunked it. It came that way.
So Can I stop wattering and let crust form again then? and redunk down the road?? What do I do??
Maybe because it came from a nursery, it was old or not ready?

With shiitake, you have to remove the bag when popcorning has stopped and block is full browned. Also, a dunk before the first flush is not recommended. However, you have to let form the crust again, by minimizing watering, this will also reduce risk of green mold. When the block will be full brown, you could do a cold shock and slap it a bit to induce fruiting.

Alright,
Well, thanks for all the pointers guys! So I followed advice and just stopped watering altogether for the last 8 days. The Brown Crust began to form and looks like dairy queen chocolate Ice cream kind of. Kind of creamy looking.
So today I was sitting next to my little self contained computer desk where I had move the block and I noticed my first pin! Whoa! What a day!

So I pulled out some cold spring water from the fridge and doused it good with a spray bottle.
From here, would you still recommend a cold dunk?? Or just cold spray couple times a day?
Thanks in advance for all your help.
Frizz.

nice! no do not dunk, you can dunk after your first flush is done.
For the moment keep on misting once or twice a day.
