Popcorn without pressure cooking?
    #1641484 - 06/18/03 05:36 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Hi,

Is it possible to use popcorn without a pressure cooker. I can't be arsed buying one. Can't I just steam it or something? I guess it's not gonna hurt trying...

Yes.

A friend of mine uses fractional sterilization on his popcorn jars, with 100% success. Basically he gets the water content right by boiling the popcorn to make it swell, loads his jars, then cooks them 3 nights in a row @ 1.5 hours.

I think he may have had success steaming twice, but im not sure.

I don't know i hear stories when people that don't use a presure cooker have %100 success and I also hear stories when people have %100 contams too so I would bit the bullet and buy presure cooker cuz you will need it sooner or latter and I think you would get upset if you worked hard and then a whole batch got contams

I think it all depends on how long they are boiled/steamed for, and how many days in a row this is done.

I would do it no less than 2 hours, 3 days in a row. I asked my friend about this today and found that is what he relys on now, still having 100% success rates. When he did it 2 days in a row he would still get bad jars sometimes.

His exact method is as follows:
1. Boil raw popcorn in a pot for about an hour or so, until the kernals swell and start to split.
2. Load polyfill lid jars with popcorn and screw on lid, then cover with aluminum foil and rubber band it in place.
3. Steam jars for 1.5 - 2 hours with a steam collander thing that holds the jars off the bottom of the pot and out of the water so only steam hits them.
4. Allow to sit for 24 hours or so, then repeat step 3 two more times

I feel bad for turning him onto the popcorn, but he admits that it is much easier to work with, despite the extra time involved. I agree, PF cakes are so messy comapred to grain. Plus, you just cant run to the 24hr supermarket and pick up vermiculite when you need it. Perhaps if he lived a little closer I would let him use my PC.....

Buy a PC for like $60 and save yourself a bunch of time, electricity (or gas, whatever ya got), and effort.

Yeah, I'll let you know how I go. I'm not buying a pressure cooker, never needed one before. They take up too much space and I've never had contam problems in the past. If the popcorn goes all pear shaped then I'll just have to stick with substrate cakes.

My goldfish used a microwave with excellent results. All he did was fill the jar with the simmered popcorn and add water about a 1/4 inch above the popcorn line. Cook 15 minutes with no top. Add a tinfoil cover as you're taking out.

My goldfish has been contam free so far on the popcorn and is starting to see some nice growth now. Dont have an incubator so colonization is a tad slow for now.

Wouldn't the popcorn pop if you did that? Or is that supposed to happen..
