Problems with new All American 921 Please help!

A friend recently recieved a new All American pressure cooker in the mail. It doesn't seem to be damaged at all but it won't go above ~3 psi.
He read and followed all the instructions. As instructed he put a small amount of vaseline on the bottom part of the seal, he put 1.5" of water in the bottom, added his jars, tighted opposite wingnuts simultaneously, allowed steam to come through vent for 7 minutes, placed regulator on 15 psi and waited. He's tried 3 times now, each time it comes to the same pressure and stops increasing pressure. Steam is leaking from 1 or 2 points on the sides but the book says this is normal and won't affect anything and will cease after a few uses.
Does anyone know what my friend should do or try in order to get his canner to function properly?
Thanks

Thanks for your reply. My friend thought that this was the problem and has tighted all the wingnuts as tight as possible, they were already tight but it seems to have helped somewhat as the cooker has now achieved 5 psi. However, this pressure has remained static for several minutes without increasing and the regulator weight is not moving.

Now we know the reason..but what to do? Have you tried placing the lid on by turning it around 180? ? Perhaps it has a better seat this way.

exactly how long have you allowed to try to build pressure before giving up? that may be a problem.

That's a very good idea. The pressure seems to be increasing very slowly, its at about 7 now. I'm going to see if it can get to 15 or at least 10. If not, I will try your idea. I'll let you know how it goes.
Thank you.

Now we're cooking; (at 15 psi) it's finally working. I guess the wingnuts need to be really tight from the very beginning. I did turn it 180? relative to the lid so that might have helped too.
Thanks Anno!

There is a small arrow on the lid that you are suppose to line up with the arrow on the pot.

It is very common for a brand new cooker to leak a small amount for the first couple of uses. This will go away rather quickly with use. Make sure you have the marks lined up like ^Magash has pointed out and the lid is secure. I am glad you have gotten it to work, All American is simply the best available (IMO).
