Am I the only one who thinks this might actually be worse for the environment? Releasing the CO2 from landfills or anywhere seems like a really bad idea. I can't understand the benefits from this.

Landfills are known for naturally releasing a lot of methane gas,
which is a worse contributor to global warming than carbon dioxide.

here is one small example of the gigantic problem posed by plastic waste to environmental and human health. This is an albatross that died from accidentally swallowing plastic bottle caps .

If it's already buried, it's probably best to leave it there.

If there is a site that is contaminated with plastic debris, this might help them break down.

I got an email from the guy who found the plastic, he said "The pvc eating fungi growths very slow, and the saprofites very rapid, for initial soil fungi  isolation we use the PDA + Streptomicyn  + Bengal rose media, thats inhibit bacteria and actynomicetes."

Interesting point. Cellular respiration releases co2. I don't know
how many tonnes of co2 would be released by this.
I only know the krebs cycle. It works with glucose. I have no idea
how these fungi break this stuff down. Ill ask my business partner when
he returns from vacation to look into it. He is a chemist.
Worth looking into.
What suggestion for removing plastics from the environment do you have?
Also, what about replacing methane releasing micro organisms with the
fungi?

Ooops. Did not see that pseudotsuga mentioned the methane.

It would all be fine if we'd make plastic from carbon compounds, which are already in the biological cycle. Getting up crude oil and manufacturing plastic from it is the problem.

I am interested in doing some experiments with this fungus. I think it is amazing that nature has a solution for the problems we create. Does anyone have a culture of this yet?

I found this paper which looks at bacteria and fungi which biodegrade plastics. It discusses Aspergillus, Penicillium, Phaenarochete, Pestalotiopsis, and possibly some other species. Communities of Microbial Enzymes Associated with Biodegradation of Plastics

Does anyone have access to the full paper?

When hydrolysing the plastic, the carbon is majoritary converted into fungal biomass that can be used be the other members of the food chain when the mycelium dies.

Its false to think that everything will be released as CO2...

Also, Alan

If you sequence it, are you going to publish the result on PlOS one? If so i'd be interested to have access to the data

Implemanting and expressing the metabolical pathway into a suitable vector (T. reesei or S. cerevisiae for example) could lead to plastics degradation factories...

I have a bubbletea shop here in Puerto Rico and I wanted to see if I can get some of these spores so that I can use it to break down all the plastic cups we use. Can you point me to where I can get the spores?

I think everyone is still waiting on their samples. I know I am. After
the samples are obtained then we will isolate all the different species
that are present and figure out which are doing the work. Or which
combination of species is doing the work.

What is PIOS one?  I usually post sequences in the thread.  I might add it to genbank.

I assume he is talking about PLOS one journals which is an open access peer reviewed scientific journal.

Alan has spoken with him. He sent out a sample to me about a month ago.
It has yet to arrive.

I gave him 2 addresses and he said he sent them to both.  I haven't been able to figure out who the second person was, it was someone I didn't know, but they seemed pretty serious.  Appears that I have deleted their PM's.

So it could be nice to notify me when it is sequenced

[Edit] Didnt see the other post, genbank will be good enough hehe
