cut the bag, am I bad?
    #1640299 - 06/17/03 07:31 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I've got a growbag from a place that, from the messages I've read, may not be very good, but I think I'm needing help here. The bag colonized ok, but after three weeks I began to wonder if something wasn't wrong. I cut the top off the bag and placed it in a plastic container with water in the bottom, and a cover filter. This was all done in front of a HEPA air curtain. I don't see any contamination, but now it's about 1 1/2 months and no pinning. It's still alive because there's still fluffy white growing out of the (now) mat of tan growth that has apparently died off. I haven't seen any radials, or ropes yet. The growth seems to pile up on itself over and over. It's also still white and growing around the edges of the bag. I've noticed clear to tan drops of moisture form in the fluff. It's not from dripping above. The droplets don't evaporate, the fluff just grows around and over it. There's also droplets along the sides of the bag where the cake has pulled back in places. Is everything lost, or is there hope? I've never read about the droplets, or the piling of growth. Strain is treasure coast, and I've read it's a slow one.

Sounds like it needs to be cased.

Should I crumble the cake into a bowl? Would moist, or dry vermiculite be alright?

Should be moist but not saturated; when you squeeze it hard only 1 or two drops should come out.

You could also break off chunks and grow them like cakes; this works, too.

Ok. I've put the bag in a bowl and filled the bowl with moist vermiculite with about 1/4" over the top of the growth. I put that bowl into a larger bowl with a little water in it, and put a dinner plate on top. Since it was fully colonized I hope sterilizing everything wasn't needed since I didn't do that. Before I did all this I poked a little fluff off with a knife and placed it into another bowl. The fluff was almost the consistancy of store-bought mushrooms. Dense. I had previously prepared two bowls last night with 2 cups vermiculite, one cup water, one cup organic brown rice flour, two tablespoons of regular sugar, and a small amount of mineral suppliment. After mixing I placed both bowls into the microwave for eight minutes and let sit 24 hours. Today I placed moist vermiculite over that and microwaved again for nine minutes. After cooling I place the fluff into each corner of one bowl. The second bowl I placed spores from syringe into each corner. I want to see how this works, or if I fail completely. Final report later.
