My friend just bought a bag of mushroom substraiit from Loews home improvement for $3 for a bag of 40 lbs. It looks like dirt. The back of the package says it's sterile and has many nutrious ingredients like wheat straw and other good stuff. I was thinking of using the stuff for an outdoor patch. You think it would work fine if I just used that instead of hay and poop? Anyone ever use this stuff before? You think it would work for inculating jars indoors? Maybe I do a patch of this mushroom dirt and a patch of hay and poop. Then I'll give a nice report. Sorry for all the questions. Peace Rudiger420

Hhhmm I'm a bit stoned so this may sound strange.
I think it would work if you soak the mush substrate in water and then drain you can load it up into jars and sterilize.

Are you sure it's not spent mushroom compost? I buy that stuff from L0wes and use it in my garden.

What you have found is spent mushroom compost. Some will mistake this for compost designed for mushroom cultivation. This is only partly true.
It was specifically mixed for commercial mushroom growth, but mushrooms have already used much of the useful nutrients. After the casing life has ended, they mix it and package.
There are still enough nutrients for mushroom growth, but you would probably be happier with something fresh.

You cannot buy true mushroom compost ready for growing mushrooms at ANY home supply or garden center. You can get dung and compost, but not actual "mushroom compost."
