Having to stop hiking because of ticks

This has got so bad now. I've had around 20-30 ticks in me this year and nothing I can do is preventing them.
My favourite hill to hike on I noticed if I stopped for a few minutes they'd be crawling up my legs and I was going mad brushing them off, stripping clothes off, running back to my car and I still got 5 bites and spent the next hours making cotton nooses and carefully removing them to not leave the heads in.
Next time I made sure not to stop at all and hiked fast all the way with my trousers tucked inside my socks - but they still got me. this time i noticed they seemed to be in the wind or something because they were just appearing on my top, on my arms and stuff. At this point I decided not to go walking on that hill at all anymore.
My new hike was 90% gravel track, i figured they were probably in the grass were the sheep and animals roam. Yet again though today I've just found another one and had to noose the fucker out
Its really getting to me now. I love hiking. yet i shower everyday and have taken every prevention I can think of but these fuckers are still getting me no matter where I go or what I do. Its got to the point where I'm going to have to hike inside the city and not visit the countryside I can't be pulling out ticks everyday. my chances of having Lymes disease etc must be through the roof by now too and I'm quite worried about because its very hard to diagnose and 90% of the time you get no symptoms until later in life

What are you wearing? It sounds like you aret wearing enough clothing.. Always tuck in your shirt, pants ends, and socks properly and check your jeans every on in a while for buggers working their way up.
If all else fails, go to DEET, 30-100% if you can.
EDIT: I reread and noticed you tuck. Maybe you need to cover more surface area. If not, meet the DEET.

Personally I hate DEET, the smell and the potential toxicity keep me away from it. However, I am doing paid research in the woods this summer and needed a good defense myself. I found my answer in permetherin. You spray it on your clothes a day or 2 before you want to use them and allow it to dry. Once dry it is odor free and can withstand being washed 5 or 6 times before needing reapplied. Sawyer makes a product that is 5% and can be found on amazon. I just went to Tractor Supply Co and bought 10% for livestock and diluted it down myself. I sprayed my boots and 2 pairs of pants (I only use these for hiking now to reduce exposure). I have had 0 ticks on me this year. Some of the feedback on amazon says that if you place a tick on a piece of permetherin clothing that it will curl up and fall off in a minute or so.

Yeah it works great, but it's just about as bad as DEET. I would be careful breathing that stuff or getting it on your skin. It acts as a neurotoxin and is highly toxic to fish and aquatic life, and mammals.. although the data isn't fully there, exposure to it is linked to a variety of conditions in humans as well Just be careful is all

I have a high fever and red circle rash. Now I have to visit the doctor and try to get on antibiotics.
Ticks don't stop me from hiking, but this year has been especially brutal. Picking multiple off in a single day...

I went hiking of the lost coast trail not too long ago. I swear I was walking in a sea of ticks Every time I looked down I would notice 5 on my pant legs.
But I just brushed them off and kept on moving Wear better clothing

Neem oil is supposed to repel ticks. Not sure how effective it is, but neem oil isnt toxic. Actually I believe it is good for your skin.

Trouble is its hot as shit in summer, can't exactly cover every inch of me :p even then they'd prolly still get in.
I'm just sticking to walking the beach and roads from now on. I can go back to hill hiking in winter when theres not many ticks about :p

I always wear jeans and at least ankle-high socks in the Summer. I live in Georgia, too, so I know hot.
I'd rather have a sweaty crotch than 10 tick bites! It's a compromise, ya know? You probably want to take a shower after hiking anyways, so what's the diffeence in the end?
If you do suit up more, carry more water.
Also, shave your head. It makes it much easier to detect if a tick is attached to your head and 1,000,000,000 times easier to remove.

There is one study which suggests that chronic ingestion neem oil may be bad for the liver, especially in children.
Otherwise, it has been shown to exhibit a low toxicity to mammals.

shit,I've been bit,at least 200 times since March, and I have permanent spots from them, and I have yet to catch Lyme disease.I have never seen them so bad in my life like they are here this year! They also have to be attached for at least 24 hours before you can catch Lyme too by the way.

Thanks for the tip. Believe it or not we get serious tick infestations here in the tropics and I am always looking for preventatives for me and the cats.

HOw do you people not catch these things? It may be gay, but I strip down and have my hiking partner check my chest, arms, back, legs (and I do a more personal inspection on myself inside the tent )
I must check myself every 30 min. If thats what it takes people!

Shit, I'd rather be called gay and every other name in the book instead of getting some fucked up disease. I comb myself for ticks daily, usually multiple times. If I'm out in the woods, I'm as anal about it as you are, I check every nook and cranny up in this bitch!

Make sure you dilute it similar to these instructions and if you are going to use it on your pets, only apply it to their collar. The cat's nose will be sensitive to it so definitely don't put it on undiluted!
