I heard that a cup of beer will attract slugs and they will hop in and die... However iam not sure you want to put a cup of beer outside.

Yeah. Sink a few bowls or cups of cheap-ass beer into the ground, so that the edge is roughly level with the ground, and the slugs and snails will go for those, mainly, instead of your mushrooms.

if bugs are munching on the patch, spreading some diatomaceous earth around the patch might take care of the problem. i know a beaver that recommends this.

Diatomaceous earth is stuff for pool filters. I assume you would want to keep the DE off the patch, just spread it around the patch?

yes, just spread it heavily around the patch. it will break down the shell of any bug that gets into it. it seems to work on slugs also. i don't know if it would hurt the mushrooms at all. DE isn't poisonous, but it might dry up those caps before they get a chance to grow nice and big.
unfortunately, flying bugs will still be able to get at the patch.

DE shouldn't hurt the mycelium, but be careful not to breath the shit.  The reason it works on bugs like ants and such is that it's like billions of tiny little glass slivers.  These get into insects' joints and fuck 'em all up.  You don't want this in your lungs.

Other than that, the stuff is perfectly safe to handle.
