Can you make SUPER cakes?!
    #1639544 - 06/17/03 01:59 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I am having some troubles casing my shit... but after using WBS spawn it sucks to go back to the PF tek, jars take almost twice as long to colonize. Is there anyway that you could use vermiculite and WBS or something like that to have the water retension properties of PF cakes with the ultra fast colonization of WBS? I might go ahead and try some 50% verm 50% WBS cakes. Has anyone ever done this before?

PF style jars don't necessarily hold more moisture. Why would mixing in vermiculite with wbs increase colonization time? Verm is non-nutritious.

A cake is a cake, no matter what ingredients are in it. The reason wbs colonizes so fast is that you can shake it up. You can't shake up cakes. Hence slow colonization times. It has nothing to do with water retention.

Try looking at why you are having failures doing your casings. Casings can be easy, super easy, if you can get past the creation of clean spawn. Sounds like you are having contam problems and can't get clean spawn. Once you have the spawn, you can dump it into a dirty box with pasteurized straw on your kitchen floor with a dog watching you the whole time and succeed.

... My spawns good. And i disagree about the shaking thing. I have WBS jars that have been overly wet and have colonized in two weeks without ANY shaking at all. I have popcorn jars that i shake every few days and after 9 days they aren't anywhere near as far colonized as WBS jars after 9 days.
I thought that verm would be a good idea after asking about fruiting WBS cakes, people said not to fruit WBS as a cake because it provided inferior yields unless cased due to its lack of good water retension. I didn't think verm would speed up colonization, i just thought it would allow you to fruit your WBS as cakes and not as casings. Have you ever fruited WBS cakes and gotten good yields? I just figured that if water retension was the reason they didn't yield, that putting verm in would help you fruit them better as a cake. And if you think about it... using verm/coir you can get contamed relatively easy because cobweb will grow on top of the coir/verm.

Hmmm... I am trying to fruit two of them at the moment but they aren't doing shit. Neither is my other PF cake... they have been in there two weeks now. I'm going to keep em in there forever though. lol. I will go check the advanced forum.

So has anyone ever tried the WBS/verm thing or is that just my dumb idea? I heard something about rye/verm in the advanced forum but was unable to find a TEK for it or anything.

There is a flat-cake tech that has some of the ingredients you listed. It has WBS, verm and BRF. I don't know for sure, I have never used it I was reading through some techs and thought it sounded interesting. Do a search for flat cake and see what you find.

pure WBS works fine in PF style jars. the only thing is that you cant shake em like quart jars, but they still colonize in a couple weeks.

I know it works fine, but you can't use it for fruiting as a cake.... which was the whole point of my thread, i was wondering if you couldfruit it as a cake by the addition of polymer crystals or verm or something to aid in water retension.

Do you fruit them in the bag, or case them in the bag?

They were made to fruit in the bag but some have cased them.

Mycotopia archive link

Not sure where those other links are for casing. maybe someone else has them.

AH! See, if you fruit them in the bag and they do ok as WBS and verm, that's what i was looking for. No one got what my question was really besides you.
