How to bring my monotub back to life? With Pictures
    #16390695 - 06/16/12 04:02 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

To make a long story short. My monotub hasn't even began to pin. I didnt use any polyfill. The substrate shrunk like hell. And I gave it no water. That is excatly what I did and why it is failing. Yesterday I got some polyfill to plug the holes and a squirt bottle. What should I do to bring it back to life. Pictures in 5 minutes.

How do i know if the RH and FAE are high? I left the polyfill off for weeks so I figured the FAE was very high... but then that probably made the RH very low.

I've never seen an unfruited substrate shrink that much, must of lost a lot of water. After you dunk it keep the polyfill in the holes loosely and mist as needed to keep it from drying out again. hopefully that's all that's needed and it will recover. You can adjust the polyfill some after you see how the fruits are developing, if it seems they're not getting enough FAE.

It doesn't hurt to delay your other grow and let it consolidate some by not introducing fruiting conditions right away and even though it may pin eventually like that I wouldn't wait for it to pin as a sign of being ready to fruit.

How long do I dunk for? Can i just add tap water into my tub and put something ontop the sub to keep it from floating?

I'm not very optimistic about your substrate.

It never colonized to 100%.  ?

and the 'rubbery' surface in pic #3 ... not good.

you guys hear of an older technique of 'scratching'?  I don't know, but, this substrate may be a candidate.

The halt in colonization and rubbery substrate surface are concerns.

Yeah that works. I usually do about 4 hours with the water left trickling into the tub to keep it moving some. I'm guessing that will still be enough even though it looks particularly dry and compacted.

I noticed that there are still those few spot that may not have finished, but don't think there's really a better alternative. Scratching is for overlay which I is when mycelium is dead and hardened over it. I don't think that's overlay though I've never run into myself nor even seen anyone run into it, seems a very uncommon occurance.

It started to colonize then stopped then started... then i dabbed the extra moisture up with a napkin which is probably why it looks like that... but yes it is very dry... do u think just misting extra lot will take care of it so i wont need to dunk it... or can i just flip the sub over to expose teh other side?

no, i would not, u will trap anything on the surface on the bottom.
get it out of the tub if it will comew out in one peice, and rinse it well in the bathtub. if it seems like it will break apart, rinse it as much as you can in the mono. after the rinse, put it back in the mono the same way u took it out, and dunk it for several hours. drain the water, rinse it again and fruit it. adjust polyfill as needed, just like if u didn't fubar the whole tek.
lol! i have fruited shit that looked similar, and they can still fruit. it won't pin well, but what u get will likely be large. but it won't yeild like if you hadn't totally fucked it all up.
so don't feel bad!

Reviving the sub:
Use some PVC pipes and caps thru the bottom holes of your mono to hold the sub under water. Fill it up. Let it hydrate for 4-8 hrs.  Or you can tape the holes up and use a weight to hold the substrate under the water.
If you used the pvc pipes, drain the water and flip it upside down with the PVC still in.  It will support the substrate. Let it drain for 30 min.
Put back into fruiting conditions. Proper set-n-forget monos use very very thin puffs of polyfill in each hole, just enough to retain humidity. You want maybe 1/20th of the amount of poly I see in your pics.  Run a fan in the room on low, pointed away from the tub. Let em fruit.
I hope this helps. That substrate looks sad :frown:

Some sound advice in this thread to help you hopefully salvage your project.

I'm not going to regurgitate what has been said above, because it has been said well. But I'll leave you with two quotes that have been mantras to help me get through some of my failures:

"A young girl asked her grandmother, "Grandma, how did you become a master gardener?". The grandmother replied, "I killed 1,000 plants." - Japanese proverb

"Every failure is the price of tuition I have paid to learn a new lesson." - Paul Stamets

I 100% AGREE LOL... thats why i don't see this as a failure but rather an experiment and learning lesson

I will dunk asap

I still don't think that is mushroom myc.....I hope I'm wrong....

--------------------
The mushrooms, which grow only during the season of torrential rains, awaken the forces of creation and produce an experience of spiritual abundance, of an astonishing, inexhaustible constitution of forms that identifies them with fertility and makes them a mediation, a means of communion, of communication between man and the natural world of which they are the metaphysical flesh.

UPDATE: the cake held together and i washed it off gently on all sides... the bottom side looked 100% norml and had no green or anything that resembles bad stuff.

However, I did notice as i tried washing off the exposed dirt that there was alot of dirt underneath.. so I apparently didn't let it colonize long enough... but currently it is being dunked in luke warm water and being held down with a huge pot of water sitting on top of it. Damn that thing absorbed water fast... it was like a sponge

the yellow, rubbery parts, which i have had on a few tubs as well, is likely from metabolites that excreted and then dried on the surface. also, when it was wet it had some jelly-like shit on it.
cubes are INCREDIBLY tough, especially once the sub has colonized.
i have had them look like that, have cit nto it, burned it with a torch, dropped it out of the tub onto the carpet, and am likely forgetting other ways i have abused them, and they all still managed to give me fruits.
