Abalone mushrooms ready to fruit--advice for newbie please!

I have an abalone mushroom substrate of barley that is almost fully colonized after 9 days, and this is my first time growing mushrooms. I'm setting up a fruiting chamber with moist perlite, and I have a couple of questions that I would like to have answered:
1) should I do a 24 hour immersion in cold water before putting the cake in the fruiting box?
2) If I do the 'dunk', is it advisable to roll the cake in vermiculite, and/or top it with a little vermiculite as a casing layer?
As of now, the cake looks like it's ready to go, snowy white and solid in a vented mushroom bag.
Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Hi Rick,
I've never grown them from cakes, but I have successfully used sawdust/wood chip bags. They don't need any kind of casing layer. I follow Stamets' growth parameters: 70-80 degrees F, 95-100% humidity, and 1,000-2,000 (though I've used as low as around 500) lux light for primordia formation. And for fruitbody development, the same 70-80 degrees F, 500-1000 lux light, but a lower humidity of 85-90%. I also use a reasonable but not huge amount of fresh air exchange. They don't need anywhere near as much as other oyster species.
Regards, Terry

I have the cake soaking in spring water to which I added a few drops of h2o2, and I'm prepping the FC right now--making holes/moist perlite on the bottom. Do I have to encourage the cake to consolidate in any way besides lowering the temperature slightly?
I moved up the dunk to today when I saw liquid starting to accumulate in the bottom of the bag. This is all new to me--the cake smelled Ok and was surprisingly solid so I guess it was ready! I washed it *very* briefly in (chlorinated) city water to remove any loose stuff--there wasn't much, so I hope that doesn't affect it adversely. No casing?
I used a 1 pound bag of barley as a substrate and was amazed how fast it colonized/it feels like 3 pounds now. I'll keep you posted! --Rr
