greetings folks of shroomery ..so this is what happened to me and my father :/ MWL ,it took me a week to figure out if we're having a flu or what ? ,i browsed here on the forum and saw a few topics but i wanted to write anyway and maybe here some of your experience and if there is a way to prevent and keep safe . First to tell you the basement is gone wild shiitake everywhere , i wasn't expecting this ,there is so much , i can't sell it ..and now i'm not sure i can pick it either ,some of them just grow huge ,and i noticed there is like little fog even ,i wonder if that is the spores ,i ventilate the air twice a day ,sorry for not posting pictures .Some of that white stuff i see has fallen over the blocks like dust ,i'm halfway sure about it anyway , i was wearing a mask . Anyway we really got sick at home ,crazy ,coughing attack in 4 in the morning ,awful ,i'm a bit better now as i use some medicine for it ,are you having some similar problems and how you protect yourself ? Thinking to buy an army gas masc .Thanks and i wish you all healthy mushroom day. Vlad

I've had my fans clogged up with shiitake spores as well as everything else, but haven't gotten sick from them.
For me at least, it's only oyster mushroom spores which have this effect, and I've had to quit growing them for this reason. I've also not heard of anyone else getting sick from shiitake spores.
If this turns out to be the case, I suggest a full face respirator with charcoal cartridges and an N95 attachment to go over the charcoal canisters. I bought mine from uline.com so I could go back to oyster growing, but just the sight of oysters now gives me a (psychological I'm sure) case of the willies so I just don't grow them anymore at all. Yes it's sad a bit ,simply cause i was so happy to see them develop so good ,and now this ... Thanks anyway ,i'll look for ways to protect myself ,in meantime i searched for similar issues and on the web there are few examples ,maybe me being a smoker makes it worse ,one thing for sure there are lot of shrooms there ,i will look for a way to take some pics and share , another thing is that puzzles me ,some of the shrooms are a bit different then the normal ,not so dark brown ,more light color - don't like them very much by the looks and also cause i can't sell it really i decided to dry them ,i read somewhere that drying them on the sun is no good ,on another article i read that drying them on sun gives them extra d-vitamin .. anyway , i asked too many questions Thanks and all best Vlad

Bear in mind, shiitake are at their best quality before the veil tears, and don't really gain any weight after that anyway. In addition, if you let shiitake puke spores all over the substrate, it quits fruiting and green mold soon develops.
Pick early to fix the problem. RR

Another thing to consider is that dried shitake fruits are another attractive product to offer.
Good luck,
JD
P.S. I have actually gotten a "mushroom cough" a couple of times...usually when I get busy on other things and neglect blocks in the GH in my man-cave.
Most recently this was Panaeouls tropicalis:

Just google for 'solar dryer', I'm sure you can quickly build something out of spare parts.

I have had expisure to oysters for years now and know the feeling. I find that taking reishi extract also helps reduce the allegic reaction especially when mixed with common sense like picking early enough to avoid sporulation and wearing a simple filter mask.
I think the use of heavy misting before entering the room may also help wash the spores onto the ground rather than leaving it in the air.
