Maryland find Needs Id.
    #1638724 - 06/17/03 01:13 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Hey ,
I just recently been introduced into the world of hunting mushrooms.. I found these in a field near my house.. they were growing on the edge of a field and between a freshly plowed field and a field with loose hay on it. If you have any idea please let me know.. I performed a spore print and it turned out jet black.. Also there is no notable blueing reaction when the fruit or stem is damaged. The stem is hollow. . I posted one picture if you need more let me know.. I can go back and take some pictures of the speecimen itself without it being picked.. thanks.. I have sided on this specimen being a panaeolus subbalteatus mushroom .. let me know if I am right. .and if it is ok to eat these babys.. I recently went back to find that there are more and larger ones in the same spot.. but no where else have I found anything like these.. .Let me know if you need more info.

No. Not even close.

Yeah, I would agree with it not being a Panaeolus subbalteatus.

Just like gumby's link says, those are the all too common Psathyrella velutina. Psilocybes don't have a velvety, hairy, fuzzy cap like that...ever. Psilos will be smooth, maybe sticky, slimy, and if dried just smooth skin with wrinkles, hence the name "Psilo" which I think means bald head?

Yup, psilo means bald, and cybe means head. In Dutch they're called 'kaalkopjes', which translates into something like 'little bald heads'

Also It says on that post that the weilii will be within a mile if you are finding these guys .. does that apply to maryland as well??? and what type of areas do they live in? Anyone know a good guide to hunting shrooms in maryland?

Yeah, unfortunately like Magma said, Ps. weilii only grow in Georgia and perhaps South Carolina. I created that post primarily because a LOT of people in Georgia were having problems telling the difference between weilii and P. velutina. I'll go back and specify that weilii are only found in Georgia.
