Using an Incubator as a Terranium
    #1638132 - 06/16/03 06:23 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

Hi, I was wondering if after colonizing my jars in this incubator would it be possible/effective to fruit my cakes in this with a layer of perlite across the bottem? If anyone has any useful information or advice I would be pleased to hear your opinion/ideas.
Thanks

It's summer. Why would you need to incubate your terrarium? Do you live in Siberia or something? Fruiting cakes/casings like temps around 74 F. Colonizing jars like temps around 85 F. This would not be the best idea.

Well my friends room is in the basement and he has central air and he says it gets pretty cold down there so I need to get some heat to fruit these beasts.

It will work then if you set the fish tank heater to a lower setting. Make sure it's around 74 in there, not the 85 F temps that you use to incubate your jars. Also, make sure it has a lid. The one in the pic doesn't look like it has one. Without a tight fitting lid, you will lose all of your humidity.

If I used a tight fitting lid wouldnt the lid have to be translucent I thought when you were fruiting the cakes/casings needed some odd hours of light daily isnt this true? And as for the incubation process the method im using (pf-tek) it says to use a pillow or blanket to keep in the heat and thats with the temp. on the submergible heater already set at 27 degrees Celsius which is the max it should be, 80 F I think. What about a translucent plastic bag to go overtop of the terranium as shown for the fruiting chamber in the tek im using (Pf-tek for simple minds) found at fungifun.org. Would that be a tight enough seal? If not why does the tek im using suggest using it?

You're planning on using the same container just out of convenience right? I'm planning on doing the same thing.

I'll just take the top bucket out and let it be standalone. For light I'm going to cut out a big square in the middle of the lid. Then I'll epoxy or hot glue some clear sheet plastic covering the hole. That plastic is really cheap at a home improvement store.

When you use a lid to prevent humidity from slipping away and contaminants entering your terrarium, indeed you should use a lid that is translucent. If you don't have a translucent lid, you could consider using an opaque lid and installing a small lamp inside the terrarium. Just remember that a lamp will generate heat, which you should account for in the settings of your heater and be sure to make some safety measures wrt. melting and burning plastic. But it's easier to look for a translucent lid. Keep in mind that with a tightly-sealing lid, you need to fan a couple of times a day to remove excess CO2 and to allow fresh O2 to enter.
I read that you set the heater to 27 Celsius (80.6 F). This is too high for fruiting IMO. Set it to something like 21 C (69.8 F),

If I remember correctly, ideal fruiting temps for P.C. is around 76F.

You're right Psychomanium, optimal fruiting temperature is between 23C and 26C (say, 73F to 79F). My 21C (69.8F) was a bit on the low side, sorry 'bout that.

K, well I like cb9fl's idea except for the fact that it still might be too cold even inside the standalone bin to fruit. Could anyone help or have suggestions that relate to my problem?
