Casing too wet - start over?
    #1638388 - 06/16/03 10:33 PM (15 years, 11 days ago)

I just did I quick check of the casings I made yesterday and was quite surprised to discover that I could clearly see water through the see-through sides of one of the casing containers. If I tilted the container, it was easy to see water running through the vermiculite and casing mixture. I carefully peeled back the corner of the lid and drained a very substantial amount of water out into the sink. Now the casing mixture looks like normal consistency, but maybe it's too late?

Well, I guess it's not going to hurt to let it go and see what happens - nothing to lose.

My guess is that you're ok. The mycelium hasn't been submerged in the water for more than 24hrs or so, which is more or less standard procedure with PF cakes (dunking), so this shouldn't have damaged the mycelium too much. Keep a close eye on the containers though, as more water may drain from the casing and accumulate on the bottom of the container. You might have to repeat your sink-draining procedure. Otherwise, I suggest you proceed as planned.

You didn't mention the depth of your sub-casing layer. If the water was just in vermiculite, no harm would have come to your mycelium.

Your biggest worry would be contamination. Monitor closely and regularly for odors and off colors.

Yeah you could let the substrate sit on wet vermiculite indefinetly, but about 36 hours of submerged time is the max you could do and expect your mycelium to live to tell the tale. I think your fine. Plus if all the substrate wasn't submerged, you could only lose some of it.

You're pompeius, aren't you? I'll make a pompeian of you unless you hold your toungue!
