CD terranium - few questions on design..
    #16379514 - 06/14/12 03:20 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

I'm trying to build a small-scale terranium for fruiting psilocybe cubensis mushrooms but I'm a bit stuck on the design. I don't actually have a CD stack, but I've got two plastic containers which are quite possibly better. Here's a photo of each of them.

18 cm tall 15 cm diametre

27 cm tall 11 cm diametre

I've got a couple of questions, I hope some of you clever people can answer them for me...

1. Which one of these containers will be best for growing a small, half pint cake in?

2. Should I drill some small holes around the top to let some air flow thru, and if so, is polyfil necessary?

3. How much pearlite should I use at the bottom of the container?

4. Should I use the original lids or replace them with a plastic bag?

5. What is the most effective method of sterilizing these containers with household products? Boiled water with a small amount of bleach added? Refresher wipes from KFC?

6. Will fanning & misting the container daily be necessary?

That was alot of questions I know, apologies i'm a noob. If you can answer any of these questions for me it would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to build a shotgun terranium, but I don't have enough room at the moment so a CD terranium is a more fitting idea. I've never grown mushrooms before, been reading alot about it but the teks in regards to small scale terranium's are quite confusing and poorly worded. I'll write up a tek for this project if all goes well... Also if anyone has any innovative ideas to make this project any better, please chime in.

THANKYOU GUYS!

Sorry I'm going to try to half-assedly answer your questions.. Take
this with several grains of salt.

Methinks container A is the way to go. You can keep a greater volume
at a lower depth (hope that makes sense).

Drill 1/8 inch holes every 1/2 inch all around the container, top and
bottom included. I'm imagining a scaled down SGFC obviously, my logic
is since it's so small, make smaller holes, but if you follow this
plan, I think you'd be getting the same amount of hole area as if you
were building a full sized SGFC (math might not be right here: 1/8
inch hole= 1/4 area of 1/4 inch hole, therefor they would need to be
spaced at 1/2 inch as it is 1/4 of 2 inches? Sorry to all the
mathletes if this is just retarded:shrug:) Oh ya don't use polyfil.

I guess use like 4 inches of perlite

Just use the original lids.

Sure, just boil them and wipe down with a 10% bleach solution. Should
be good.

The perlite is probably gonna dry out real quick, so mist more often
than normal.

I just realized you probably want these measurements in metric. I
swear I'm not the typical American who can't do conversions...I'm
just the typical, drunk American who is too lazy to do them.

Hope this helps.

Thankyou so much, that's what I was thinking. The other CD teks didn't mention any holes though, that's why i was a bit confused. Also, do the holes go in just one ring around the container or in rows all the way up?

Sorry for all the questions D;

I've never read any CD-teks, just thinking of a scaled down SGFC.
All over, not just in one row.

Since you're emulating the design of a shotgun fruiting chamber, put the holes in rows all the way up. Go ahead and put them on the top and bottom, too. Make sure they're evenly spaced, and try to find a way to elevate the container so air can flow through the bottom

Ohkaiii I shall. I found a wider plastic container of the same height, it looks much better. Can probably fit two cakes in there next time. I'll take pics of the process so i can make a tek.

Cheers for your help guys!

Why not just get a small tote and make a proper SGFC?

As I mentioned earlier I have space restrictions where I'm currently living (with my parents). They don't approve of me growing hallucinogenic fungi.. I'm making a SGFC for edibles, but I've got to stick with easier to conceal chambers for my psilocybes.

Fair enough, I must've missed that.
I'm not one to preach morals or anything, but I have to say, the risk you're putting your parents in the way of is really shitty.  You get caught by johnny law, they take the fall as much as you do. And if your parents catch you, they might send you over his way.

Eh - I highly doubt the police would put in the time, effort and money involved in raiding me for a small (1 cake) mushroom grow when there are meth labs, weed ops and much shadier things going on in my town. I'm really on the lower end of things, only doing this to satiate my hunger for fungi & learn more about growing mushrooms. Also, my parents wouldn't get charged unless it could be proved that they had prior knowledge of the grow (which they clearly don't).

As for my parents finding it, not going to happen. They don't go thru my room, I'm not a kid. Just stuck at home due to some unforseen circumstances.

Thanks for your concern though.

4- 1/8 holes = 1- 1/4 inch hole. You have to remember the area for a circle is different than other shapes. if using 1/8 holes you would want them evenly spaced at 1". hope this helps.

Yeah it does. I'm sure the size won't matter awfully much, I'm not going to be using a drill bit anyway; going to use the smallest needle I can find and just make lots of holes when it's red hot.

try to acquire a drill bit. Your holes will be uniform, and your room won't smell like burnt plastic (as much)

I've got a drill i can use, but I'm concerned that I'll crack the container I'm using. Not much of a handy man. I've read advice on drilling the holes but I still dont feel confident enough to do it.

Ehh, I tried to factor that into my calculations if you read my post.. I
figured since a 1/8th inch hole is 1/4 the area, then using 4 times as
many holes (every half inch) would make up for this? Point me to where
my math is off, please.

its drilling a couple holes.....its not rocket science...no offens im just saying...if cracking it is what bothers you then find something to put behind it to counter act the pressure from the drill, like a block of wood thats rounded....or a can that just barely fit in there...and dont press hard...let the drill do the work:thumbup:

In sence of fractions yes you are right but when considering the area of a circle is Pi times the radius squared. a 1/8 bit is measured by diamater so you would take half the diamater (the radius) square it and times it by pi.

Do the right math and you will see what I mean.

it's really not that crucial. as long as it holds good Humidity level and gets good fae you are good to go.

Re: CD terranium - few questions on design.. [Re: nastos]

I ended up using the drill, it was easier than I thought.. Made a few cracks but it's not much of an issue, is it? They aren't big so they aren't going to let any extra air flow in and the container isn't going to be modified any more so they won't get any larger.

Also, I used a different sized drill bit on each side. I used a wider one more spaced apart on the body of it (1/4 inch - 2 inches apart), a small one with holes quite close together for the base (1/12 inch - 1/2 inch apart) and a medium sized one for the lid (1/8 inch - 3/4 inch apart).

I'm not sure why I did that, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

I don't think it will make that much a difference either way, it's going to let air into the container and that is what matters.

Also there are a few little bits of pearlite stuck to my cake now that it's in the chamber (it's on a lid but a couple of bits stuck to the side somehow). Should I bother removing them?

Thanks for your input everyone <3
