AH. It seems like forever ago when i first found this website. Ive been here on and off for quite a few years, searching stuff when it wod come up. Well now im finally delving into.the world of mycology.
First things first. I recently started my first mycology experiment, and i must say, its quite the addicting study. I purchased 8 spore syringes of 8 different strains. The purchased syringes were : golden teachers, cambodian, brazillian, puerto rican, lizard king, penis envy 6, albino a+, and b+ the free syringe was Vietnam. I use steam sterilization, 120 min at med heat full boil.
I decided to use the pf tek, as it was the most recommended to newbies like myself. I couldn't find 1/2 pint jars in wide mouth, so i purchased 1/4 pint to start. I ended up finding the 1/2. Pints the next day, FML! lol The first 20 jars i inoculated i used Vietnam and lizard king. over the coarse of 2 days i inoculated: 12 Vietnam 8 lk 10 1/2pt with b+ at 1/4 ml per hole
It was fairly uneven as i got the hang of inoculating, but got better by the b+. One jar of each, the last inoculated, did not receive spores, as i had ran out and wasn't sure if i had injected anything but air. 0% contam. when they were ready
9 of the fully colonized and rested vietnam cakes were placed inside a make-shift shotgun fc, made of two 8 or so inch tall tubs placed in a double tub fashion, the rest is as is. there is about 2 inches of perlite, which i know is not enough as it dries out quickly and i have to spray water on it near daily. the mushrooms on the vietnam cakes took about 5 days to rip their veils, and are only about 3 inches or so tall with a one inch diameter cap before opening. my guess is due to the 1/4 pint cakes, i wasn't able to keep them wet enough. is this a correct assumption?
6 of the 7 lizard kings were ground into c poo mixed with about 30 percent verm. the pins came fairly unevenly im assuming due to the pf inoculation, and a lot along the sides, which were covered in duct tape. the first few mushrooms have smaller than average heads, and a normal sized stem. the largest is about 4 inches tall, and the veil is starting to rip. there is probably 70 or 80 knots, pins, assumed aborts, and mushrooms. they are in those small one dollar approx 1L' x 7W" x 5 or 6D", in a double tub style. 8 half inch holes are drilled, with micropore tape covering them. it is just a test, and i am using the tubs as sub tubs inside a bigger monotub type setup, but had spares so tried it. Any thoughts?
should i just harvest the few that are readying instead of all at once?, allowing the rest of the pins to mature?
also i'm wondering if its the co2 buildup, or excess moisture. the sub is pulling away from the sides of the container as if it is drying out, but the fc gets opened multiple times daily.
The b+ are currently in fruiting chamber, shotgun fc, big enough for 10 cakes, but only filling half the chamber. (will this cause problems?) of coarse, misting and fanning daily until pins. the other 4 went into 3 tubs for the monotub style.
The conditions, for newly inoculated jars a Styrofoam cooler taken out after growth is observed. I incubate on a shelf at around 75 degrees, and use a glove box made of a tub with holes, kitchen gloves with hands cut off. I use Lysol, 70% iso and 10% bleach solution for sanitation. latex gloves and face mask. And have a diy alcohol lamp. I have done a few open air inoculations in the clean room we made from a laundry opening in the apartment with no problems. no contam at all so far. Ive also delved into lc with multi-spore, lc to lc, and one clone. some have been tested, some haven't.
Anyways. there's my first post. So sorry about the disorganized thinking, run on/fragment sentences, and poor grammar. i'm trying to type quickly!
You guys have been great. This is not so much me asking questions, as validating if ive been learning correctly from fellow mushroomers, as well as touch on what i'm doing and get it out there. I'm so sorry if its incomplete, long hard day. Please any criticism or input is greatly appreciated!

First off let me say i like the fact that you are doing so many different teks your...you should post pics of the setup
pick the ones that are ready and let the smaller ones mature.
could be a mixture of both co2 and moisture or lack of....hard to tell without pics of your setup
Anyways good luck bro...8 different strains...ill be watching this thread...POST PICS PLEASE!

Remove the vendors name from where you recieved the syringes. Anyways sounds very interesting, keep us posted (pics). Also yes the 1/4 pint jars can be the reason they dry out quickly, try putting the cakes in plates of water mid flush for about 6 hours to rehydrate them.

I'd like to see photos too, especially of your Lizard Kings, since I'm growing those and hardly ever run across any grows of them. Good luck with all your projects. It's so much fun tending them, isn't it?

Thank you for the kind words! Yes, i have a tendancy to jump in feet first, when i should check the water first. Haha. I want to getawa my hands on agar asap, but figure MAYBE i should do a grain spawn or more cloning to jars and lc, get the technique down before i waste my money. I always want to learn the hard way though! Hah.
Is there a min post number to reach before you can post pics, or a back way in like many other forums? Photobucket or something. Im trying it wont let me. Haha. Ill hafta go look. Thank you again!

Thank you good call and catch! Good advice! I recall seeing this somewhere. Luckly i wont be
using these 1/4 anymore. I have plenty of halfers, and plan to move on to grain as soon as i scrounge the cash to get a proper pc.

Ya i figured. Multispore inoculation being so undependable. But for 9out of 9 cakes fruiting, no contam, not bad right? Lol Just the simple fact i'm getting fruit is something to be happy about right? Lol

Absolutely, I would definitely make a LC with a clone from one of your larger mushies, that way you can ensure larger mushies for your next grow.

Yeah?! Haha. That would be amazing. Im doing this for hobby, friends, and myself. Mostly the experience. So fun. Everything from innoculating to cloning, the idea of agar work. I love science. Dont care much for makin self heal lids or grinding brf, but its way cheaper than the store bought stuff. Haha. So ill deal, but it may turn into a semi full time deal. I love shittakes and oysters. I hear they do great on cakes. (Sawdust for shiitake)

Already been there, seen the trich, and cobweb. Taught me the importance of building a glovebox.
